[N] [Bm] [G#]
[E] [F#m] Led by the [F#] brotherly, albeit not always [G#] harmonious, team [A#] of [C] Ray and Dave [G#] Davies,
the Kinks were formed in London [D] in 1964.
[G#] Their first hits introduced [E] a rough R&B -flavored [A] style
[F#] that boasted [A] primal power riffs.
[F#] [F] These songs exerted a heavy influence [D] on an entire generation [C] of hard rockers to come.
[E] In those early days, the [G#] Kinks were produced by Shel Talmy,
[C] who also produced the first hits [E] by fellow [C#] 1990 Hall of Fame [B] inductees The Who.
[F#m] For a quarter of a century, the Kinks have [Em] remained a unique proposition in rock [F#] and roll,
[E] deliberately operating independent of fashion and trend to create a completely [G#]
original [B] musical brand, [D] the Kinks.
[B]
[A]
[F#m] [A] Among [Em] the plethora of groups which made up the [C#] British invasion of [C] the mid -1960s,
[A#] a handful [Dm] had a truly [B] lasting impact.
The Kinks were certainly among them, [C] as was another group [B] known as the Hollies.
[Bm] Out of the Hollies [E] came a man who was [D] destined to join me in a series of adventures that became [B] rock and roll [D] history.
To induct the Kinks, [B] my great friend Graham Nash.
[A] [F#m] [A]
[D] [G#]
[F#] [C#] [A] How [A#] [F] [F#m]
[G#] you [F#] doing everybody?
[Bm]
It's good [G#m] to be here, it really is.
[Bm] I was [G#] 82 years old when [F] I first heard the Kinks.
[F#m] [F#] And I
[D#] Oh, excuse [C#] me, that's [D] an old page from one of [G#] Dick [D] Clark's scripts.
[F#] [D#] [G]
[C] [Bm]
[F] No, [Gm] we first met [G#] in 1964 when the Hollies and the [F#] Kinks toured [G#m] England on one of those rock and roll packages
very [F#m]
similar to Dick Clark's packages [D] here in the United States.
[B] They [G#] were the new hot band [C] from England, even though they were from London in the south
and not Manchester or Liverpool in the north, where [C#] most of the action was coming from.
[F#m] [B] It's great that I can speak in the present tense [D] about the Kinks,
because [B] [D] even today they're making really fine [A] music.
And [F#m] these guys are everything a good rock and roll [C#] band should be, they're English.
[B]
[D] I've dealt with [F#m] Crosby for 20 years, I can deal with all of [F#] you.
[D]
[A] [B] [Gm]
[F#] They're really [B] tough and musical, rebellious against the ruling class [E] and against [F] parental constraints,
but most of all they were from the street, [F#m] and that's where their fans [E] live and breathe.
[G#] This is a band that has something to [B] say.
They say it loud and clear, and [E] they've got the secret [F#] of getting their songs [G] across.
You see, it was very [F#] hard in the 60s to get accepted.
[D] It [F#m] was hard to get on the charts and it was hard to get in [D] [G#] people's hearts.
And it [F#] was
I'm sure [C] a lot of you are old [C#] enough to remember, and it [F#] looks like the majority of you here,
you know that there were an [D]
[Em] [C] [D] [F#]
[F] unbelievable amount of really great bands [D] around.
[F#] [E] [Bm] [D] [A#] The Kinks found the secret, [F#m] they play raucous, very simple, singable melodies [G#] that stick in your mind,
[C#] and rhythms that shake [G#] your body.
You can dance to the Kinks.
[F#m] You can actually think about what they're saying, and they've said some pretty [F#] outrageous things in their time.
[G#] From You Really [F#m] Got Me to [F] Tired of Waiting, [G] from Dedicated Follower of Fashion,
to Waterloo Sunset and Lola and their latest records, [G#] they've definitely proved [D] themselves to have and be a lasting force
in the musical [D#] business that we're in.
[F#m] So I'm very pleased to be the person that's [G] been chosen to induct them into the Rock and Roll [Em] Hall of Fame.
[D] These guys, very [G] underrated players and songwriters, the songwriting of Ray Davis has [E] been an inspiration to me.
I think he's a really, truly [F#m] wonderful songwriter.
And [Em] it's [D] my pleasure to [F#] introduce [Bm] you all to my very dear friends, the [F] Kinks.

[Bm] [G] [Bm] [B]
[Bm] Ray's written [F#] something for me to say.
They're fighting again!
Don't [A] fuck up.
What?
[F#] [B]
Right, OK.
This is in Ray's handwriting, so you have to [D] bear with me.
[Bm] You read it.
[Am] [C] Speak, speak, dummy, speak.
It [G#] really is [G] fabulous to be here.
[Bm] I feel really [Gm] strange actually being [F] English, being here with all the great bands [F#] that have been on before [B] us tonight.
[F#] Like Four Tops and everybody else.
And it's wonderful.
We drew a [G#] lot of our inspiration, was drawn [F#] from blues music in the first place.
So it's quite [F] nice that we're all here tonight, [E] really,
[F#] together in the same building.
I remember [G] that.
[Bm] [G] [B]
But it really is nice to be [G] here and thank you very [F#] much for the [Bm] award.
And we really do deserve it.
[G] Thank you.
[F#m]
[F#]
[F#m] [Bm]
[B] Thank you, thank you everybody.
My name's Peter, [G#] I'm the bass player, [E] ex-bass player.
[G#] [D]
[F#] [Em] [B]
[E] I'd like to say to everybody [G#] out there that it is really [A] a thrill, an honour and a privilege [F] [A] to be [G] inducted [G#] into the Rock & [G] Roll Hall of Fame.
But [C] I've just got [F#] one question.
What kept [Em] you?
[G] [E]
[F] OK, that was Pete [D#] Quaife.
[B]
Not many [F#m] people would recognise him because they always used to stick [F#] the price tag [C] over his face on the album covers.
And [F#m]
we [F#] haven't seen him for a long time.
It's nice to see him here tonight.
[G] And I didn't think he'd come.
[B] [G#]
[B] Myself, [Em] I turned down [G#] an [F] important [F#] engagement, a function at a [A#] golf club to [B] be here tonight.
[C] [D#] And [B] now that I'm [E] here, I'm very [D] pleased I made the choice to come here.
[G#]
And I'm very [F#m] honoured and flattered to take this award.

_ [F] _ No, [Gm] we first met [G#] in 1964 _ when the Hollies and the [F#] Kinks toured [G#m] England on one of those rock and roll packages
very [F#m]
similar to Dick Clark's packages [D] here in the United States.
[B] _ They [G#] were the new hot band [C] from England, _ even though they were from London in the south
and not Manchester or Liverpool in the north, where [C#] most of the action was coming from.
[F#m] _ _ _ _ _ [B] _ It's great that I can speak in the present tense [D] about the Kinks,
because [B] _ _ [D] even today they're making really fine [A] music.
And [F#m] these guys are everything a good rock and roll [C#] band should be, they're English. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ I've dealt with [F#m] Crosby for 20 years, I can deal with all of [F#] you.
_ [D] _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ They're really [B] tough and musical, _ rebellious against the ruling class [E] and against [F] parental constraints,
but most of all they were from the street, [F#m] and that's where their fans [E] live and breathe.
_ [G#] This is a band that has something to [B] say.
They say it loud and clear, and [E] they've got the secret [F#] of getting their songs [G] across.
You see, it was very [F#] hard in the 60s to get accepted.
[D] It [F#m] was hard to get on the charts and it was hard to get in _ [D] _ [G#] people's hearts.
And it [F#] was_
_ I'm sure [C] _ a lot of you are old [C#] enough to remember, and it [F#] looks like the majority of you here,
you know that there were an _ [D] _
[Em] _ _ _ [C] _ [D] _ _ _ [F#] _
_ [F] unbelievable amount of really great bands [D] around.
[F#] _ [E] _ [Bm] _ _ [D] [A#] The Kinks found the secret, [F#m] they play raucous, very simple, singable melodies [G#] that stick in your mind,
[C#] and rhythms that shake [G#] your body.
_ [F#m] _ So I'm very pleased to be the person that's [G] been chosen to induct them into the Rock and Roll [Em] Hall of Fame.
[D] These guys, _ very [G] underrated players and songwriters, the songwriting of Ray Davis has [E] been an inspiration to me.
I think he's a really, truly [F#m] wonderful songwriter.
And [Em] it's [D] my pleasure to [F#] introduce [Bm] you all to my very dear friends, the [F] Kinks.

_ _ [Bm] _ Ray's written [F#] something for me to say.
They're fighting again!
Don't [A] fuck up.
What? _
_ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ [B]
Right, OK.
This is in Ray's handwriting, so you have to [D] bear with me.
_ [Bm] _ _ You read it.
[Am] _ _ _ [C] Speak, speak, dummy, speak.
It [G#] really is [G] fabulous to be here.
_ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ I feel really [Gm] strange actually being [F] English, being here with all the great _ _ _ bands [F#] that have been on before [B] us tonight.
[F#] Like Four Tops and _ everybody else.
And it's wonderful.
_ We drew a [G#] lot of our inspiration, was drawn [F#] from _ _ blues music in the first place.
So it's quite [F] nice that we're all here tonight, _ _ [E] really, _
_ [F#] together in the same building.
I remember [G] that.
_ [Bm] _ _ _ [G] _ _ [B] _
But it really is nice to be [G] here and thank you very [F#] much for the [Bm] award.
And we really do deserve it.
[G] Thank you.
_ [F#m] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
[F#m] _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ Thank you, thank you everybody.
_ _ My name's Peter, [G#] I'm the bass player, [E] ex-bass player.
_ [G#] _ _ [D] _ _
[F#] _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [B] _ _
[E] I'd like to say to everybody [G#] out there that it is really [A] a thrill, an honour and a privilege [F] _ [A] to be [G] inducted [G#] into the Rock & [G] Roll Hall of Fame.
But [C] I've just got [F#] one question.
What kept [Em] you? _ _
[G] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
_ [F] OK, that was Pete [D#] Quaife.
[B] _
Not many [F#m] people would recognise him because they always used to stick [F#] the price tag [C] over his face on the album covers.
And _ [F#m] _ _ _
we [F#] haven't seen him for a long time.
It's nice to see him here tonight.
[G] _ _ And I didn't think he'd come.
[B] _ _ [G#] _ _ _ _
[B] Myself, [Em] I turned down [G#] an [F] important [F#] engagement, a function at a [A#] golf club to [B] be here tonight.
[C] _ [D#] _ _ And [B] now that I'm [E] here, I'm very [D] pleased I made the choice to come here.
[G#] _
And I'm very [F#m] honoured and flattered to take this award.
[C] Thank you all very much. _ _ _ _
