[A] Hi, George here.
Welcome to this video where I show you how to play the Rolling Stones Sweet Virginia on guitar and harmonica
So Sweet Virginia was recorded on the Exile on Main Street album
Stones album back in 1972 written by
[E] Jagger and Richards also had the rest of the Stones on it.
You had Bill Wyman, Mick Taylor on guitar, Charlie Watts on drums
Ian Stewart on piano and Bobby Keys on saxophone
So let's go through the guitar part starts off a little intro G D G
And C and back [G] to back to G.
Let me just go through it quick
[D] [G] [C]
[G] Okay, so that's the intro so it starts on a G chord and we arpeggiate the G
We start with D which is the [D] fourth string open
Play G, which is third [G] string open
Play B, which is second string open and then play G low G, which is the sixth string third fret
So it starts like this
Then you strum the G
Now we're going to go to the D chord and we're going to do a little
Hammer on on the D.
So we play D which is the [D] fourth string open
Hammer [E] on to the E
Which is the fourth string second [D] fret?
[E] And then we play G third [G] string open
And then we play D which is [D] fourth string open and then we strum the D
[Em] [D]
And back to [G] G
Now a little bass walk down [C] C
Which is second [B] or fifth string third fret
A fifth string second fret [G] to G
Sixth string [C] third fret
[B] [G] Okay, so let's just do that intro again
okay,
[D] [G]
[C] [G] there's the intro now we're going to go into the second part of the song which is
[A] Uh, it's the same structure
Uh as far as the um chords concerned for the solos verse chorus
It's it's just um, it's just starts in the G.
No, it doesn't start in the G
So we're going to finish the intro on G and we're going to walk into C
And we do that by playing A
Which is fifth string [B] open B fifth string second [C] fret
C which is fifth string third fret [G] so from G
[C] C
Now we're going to walk down to A [B] C [A] B A
[C] So C being fifth string [B] third fret B fifth string second [A] fret
A which is my hair in the harmonica.
Hey A which is fifth string open
[C] [E] [A] Strum the A and then we'll walk up to [E] G E which is
Sixth string [F#] open F sharp sixth string second [G] fret G which is sixth string third fret so
It um, let's do that again.
So it's G
Go walk to [A] the C
[B] [C]
[Em] C [A] B A
[F#m] E [G] F sharp G and it does it again
[C] [G] [A] [E]
[F#] [G] do it again
[Em] B [C] C
[G] C [A] B A
[Em] [F#] [G] F sharp G
Now we're going to go to [C] C
[G] back to G
We're going to do a little hammer on and we're going to go to the D
[D]
like that
back [G] to G
[C] C [B] [G] B G
[Em] So that's the that's the structure of the song you have an intro
And then you have have the chord progression
C to A to G and eventually to the D.
So just those four chords
So let's uh, let's do that.
Let's start with the intro
And i'll put the harmonica solo on it
I will put the harmonica tabs up here so you can see it and play along the um
Note on the harmonica tabs if you see a minus in front of the number then it's draw.
Otherwise it's blow
I'm using a G harmonica
Uh, just a quick note
The song was actually recorded in A but i'm playing in G and i'm using [B] a G harmonica
So if you want to play in A to play along with the album
You can learn it the way i'm showing it here and put a capo on the second fret and use an A harmonica
And that that'll match what's on the album
Okay, so let's uh, let's go through the intro
And uh one section with the chords and with the harmonica.
Okay, then we'll wrap it up.
So let's give that a go
[G]
[D]
[G] [C] [G]
[C] [G] [A]
[G] [D]
[C] [G] [A]
[D] [G] [D]
[C] [Em] [A] [G]
[C]
[G] [D]
[G] [C] [G]
[C] All right, and then we go into a verse
Verse chorus throw a sax solo in there another verse
And that's the structure for the song
Thanks for watching the video.
I hope that helped.
Hope [A] you get an idea of how to play that
Uh, by the way, that was for Lowell who uh put in the request
uh, if you have a request for a song you like to like to learn you like to hear me cover then uh,
Let me know drop me a line
Uh, please leave a comment.
Tell me what you think
I'd love to hear from you guys

And then we play D which is [D] fourth string open and then we strum the D
[Em] [D]
And back to [G] G
Now a little bass walk down [C] C
Which is second [B] or fifth string third fret
A fifth string second fret [G] to G
Sixth string [C] third fret
[B] [G] Okay, so let's just do that intro again
okay,

A which is my hair in the harmonica.
Hey A which is fifth string open
[C] [E] [A] Strum the A and then we'll walk up to [E] G E which is
Sixth string [F#] open F sharp sixth string second [G] fret G which is sixth string third fret so
It um, let's do that again.
So it's G
Go walk to [A] the C
[B] [C]
[Em] C [A] B A
[F#m] E [G] F sharp G and it does it again
[C] [G] [A] [E]
[F#] [G] do it again
[Em] B [C] C
[G] C [A] B A
[Em] [F#] [G] F sharp G
Now we're going to go to [C] C

[E] And then we play G third [G] string open
And then we play D which is [D] fourth string open and then we strum the D
_ _ _ _ [Em] _ [D] _ _
_ And back to [G] G
Now a little bass walk down [C] C
Which is second [B] or fifth string third fret
A fifth string second fret [G] to G
Sixth string [C] third fret
[B] _ [G] _ Okay, so let's just do that intro again
okay, _ _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ [C] _ [G] _ _ _ there's the intro now we're going to go into the second part of the song which is
[A] Uh, it's the same structure

Which is fifth string [B] open B fifth string second [C] fret
C which is fifth string third fret [G] so from G _ _
_ _ [C] C
Now we're going to walk down to A [B] C [A] B A
[C] So C being fifth string [B] third fret B fifth string second [A] fret
A which is my hair in the harmonica.
Hey A which is fifth string open
[C] _ [E] _ [A] _ _ Strum the A and then we'll walk up to [E] G E which is
Sixth string [F#] open F sharp sixth string second [G] fret G which is sixth string third fret so
_ It um, let's do that again.
So it's G
Go walk to [A] the C
[B] _ [C] _ _
_ [Em] C [A] B A
_ [F#m] E [G] F sharp G _ and it does it again _
_ [C] _ _ _ [G] _ [A] _ _ [E] _
[F#] _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ do it again
[Em] B [C] C
[G] C [A] B A
[Em] _ [F#] [G] F sharp G
Now we're going to go to [C] C
_ _ _ [G] back to G
We're going to do a little hammer on and we're going to go to the D
_ _ [D]
like that
back [G] to G
