[F#m] That was the record where life was never gonna be the same again
[A]
[E] Damn [F#m] the torpedoes was when Tom Petty [A] stopped being this really great songwriter
Influenced [F#] by Dylan or influenced by [A] the birds and became Tom [F#m] Petty
I
[A] was always a great believer in third albums
I knew that Tom was coming on [D] really [A] strong and I [F#] felt it was time that he could really break
it was a real sense of a
[A] Mission, you know, we were gonna make this record and it was gonna be [F#] great
[G#m] [A] [E]
[F#m] We [A] knew we were doing something that sounded [E] exciting [F#m] and that's what we were going for
I had no [A] doubt that we were gonna [E] do something [F#m] that no one ever heard before
[E] I knew [A] that we were gonna have an [E] impact sonically.
[F#m] I knew
[E] In [F#m] that album we developed a drum [E] sound that was [F#m] very big huge beautiful drum sound [E] for years that [F#m] sound was
[A] Imitated changed the way drums were [E] recorded really
[D] In
[B]
[F#] [A]
[E] [F#] [A]
[E] [F#m] a lot of time with the sonics of the album how the tones fit together and made this really polished [A] but tough sounding record
It [E] really sounded like nothing else out there
Like so many young artists he'd signed a bad deal and when he found out what it entailed
He did what very few artists do [B] is he actually said I'll go to war over this we were in a big [E] lawsuit at the
Time, you know just fighting for our right to exist in a way
And I think it made the music sort of anthemic
[B]
[E] [B] [E]
[B] [E] [B]
[E] [A]
[E]
[A] It was joy, you know [F#m] just spinning across the [B] dial and hearing yourself again and again on different stations
At one point we had four songs on the air at the same time from that [G] album
[Am]
The [D] [G]
publisher played me don't do it
Like that [Am] and told me that he was giving it to Jay [C] Giles band
So I like [D] ran to Tom's house.
I said [G] you out of your mind
What kind of sounds like Jay Giles to me?
I said it sounds like a hit to me
[C]
[G] There is a ton of material in the Tom Petty in the Heartbreakers vault
There's [Em] 2,500 tapes in there and a lot of them have been [A] sitting so long that it gum up
You [D] put him on the machine and hit play and go.
Yeah
So Ryan has an oven he had to bake the analog tapes and then transfer them digital before the tape deteriorated
[G] They're saying you need to find something hasn't been released and this you know, what are we gonna find?
And it was on this little tape box.
That's just you know, kind of nowhere just like written in pen
No markings anything and we found out it was good when I camped on that one.
That was a real good day

[G] I
Vaguely remember cutting that song we liked it that we thought well that really put on [B] the album
[F#m] [E]
The
Song surrender we cut it [C#m] for every album.
We always had [G#m] trouble getting the right [C#m] take on [A] it
It
[Bm] looked [E] like what happened is a band did that take made it a harmony and that someone made a decision like ah
We should try it again and I probably got progressively worse
[C]
[G] [F#]
[A] [E] [F#m] I
Really like about that tape [A] was the vocal is really [E] good.
There's no [F#m] guitar solo overdubs [A] or anything
It's just the band playing [E] you can hear the rhythm [F#] guitars really clearly [A] how Tom and I are playing against each other without [E] any other
Clutter [F#m] in there we cut refugee [A]
maybe hundreds of [E] times going [F#m] for the magic tape
There's just [A] roomfuls of [E] of tapes with nothing [F#m] but refugee refugee refugee
We did [A] not edit a single take [C#m] together on that record [F#m] their complete takes of every [A] song
[D] [A]
[G] [A] The blu-ray we did a 5-1 mix it just shows how well done this material is
[G] Those songs hit me like nothing I've ever heard I couldn't believe that I was walking into an album with songs [A] like that
[D] [A] You wanted to make music that moved people if there's longevity to it
It's because the songs are really good because you can tell that there's a lot of genuine passion in it
Damn, the [G] torpedoes was one of those records that
re-energized rock and roll
