Start Jamming...
Okay, I'm going to walk you gently through Limehouse Blues.
This song's been around a long time and I've heard Django play it,
I heard Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis play it,
I heard Chet and Jerry play it,
Richard Smith does a great version.
There are so many people who play the hell out of this tune.
It's a great song.
And you know, there are a lot of good keys to play it in
and I ummed and ah'd, I tossed and turned,
I did everything I know to find the best version for you,
the easiest way to play it.
And I almost convinced myself that I could teach you the song in [C] this key,
[A]
[Em]
which is the key that [Ab] Chet and Les [N] Paul play it in.
But as a solo piece, the key that I'm teaching you in,
which is the key of C, the song starts in F,
it's easier than the awkwardness of the end of the other key,
so I had to make that executive decision.
And I'm not the president, how about that?
So anyway, so here we go, let me teach you this [C] Limehouse Blues.
It's in the key of C, so it starts in F, right?
And I'm using again my [F] thumb over the top like that,
so I've got F, and I've [Eb] got the [B] 7th, the 3rd, [A] there's the [F] melody.
[D]
Now [F] that's F7, this is [D]
D7 with [Am] the F sharp in the bass,
and then [C] I'll [Gm]
[Eb] [E] [Am]
play that [F] from the start.
I'm just going,
[D]
[A] I'm not playing the 5th string,
[Ab] when I'm boom-chicking on the [F] bass, I'm going
[D]
See how it [Eb] still spells out the chord just as well?
[C] Then
I [E] [A]
[G] [A] [D] [A]
worked out that that's the best way to play it in this key.
[F] So
[D]
[Bm] [D]
[C]
[G] [C] [G] [Eb] [E]
[Am] [D]
[Am]
[G] [Bbm] [Am] [G] [Gb] now, there you [D] go.
[E]
So I'm doing the opposite [Bb] to what I did in the other [D]
songs.
I'm starting on that position and sliding up to that one.
Remember I went
[Ab] In the other song, [D]
[G] [Gb] so
Let's [F] see
[Gbm] [G] Here [Am] [C] [Eb] [E]
[Am] [C] we go.
[D]
[E] [Bm]
[Bbm] [Am] [G] Now
[Bbm] [Am] that's
[G] [Bbm] [Am] [G] Which [Am] is
[G]
[Gb] [G] [Bbm] [Am]
[G] [Gb]
[F] [Gb] [Fm] That's a great sound [Bm] there.
[Am] [G] [Gb] F sharp, then [F] F [Am] for [Em] the second time round.
Let me just show you that one [C] more time.
[Eb] [E]
[Am] [D]
[Am] [Bm] [Am] [G]
[Gb] [F] [Bm] So I go [Bbm] [Am] [G] [Bbm]
[Am] [G] [Gb]
F sharp [F] 7th, F7.
[D]
So I'll [G] play it from the top again [F] for you.
[D]
[C] [A] [G] [C] [Eb]
[E] [Am]
[D] [Am] [Bm]
[Bbm] [Am] [G] [Gb]
[F]
[D] Same in the D.
Right, now this [Am] part, [C] this has got the big stretch.
[A] [C]
C
So here's a C chord,
then I've got
[A]
A7,
with a
[E] Then [Dm] I go
That's a D minor with an open E in it, so you get
[C] Sounds nice, doesn't it?
[A]
[Dm]
You can also hear that when I [Bb] hit the A7,
[Gbm]
I'm doing that.
I'm playing that harmony with these two [A] fingers
and they're two strings apart.
Like [Cm] that.
[G] [A]
[Dm]
[Fm]
F minor, [Em] [Fm]
and I kind of rock that.
[Em] [Fm]
[Em] G,
[C] C.
[Bb] [A]
[F] Back to F.
[D]
[C]
[B] [C] [Em] [Eb]
[E] [Am] [C]
[D] [Gb]
[G] [Bbm] [Am] [G]
[Gb] [F]
[D] [Am]
[D]
And the big [C] C stretch.
[A] A7, [Dm] D minor.
[E] [Fm]
F minor [Em] to G.
[C]
Now when I played it before,
I threw in the Chet lick on [Dm] the [C] end.
Because it fits so [E] perfectly, [Fm] right?
[G] [Em]
[C] Can you see, when [Bb] you use it in context,
how cool it sounds?
[C] [Am]
[G]
[A] OK, [Dm]
[Fm] [Em]
[C]
I get to work on
