Do you play, you know, you're playing shows, what, three or four nights every week, something like that?
More than that.
Okay.
Do you practice at all when you're not playing?
Yeah, I've been practicing this morning.
What do you do when you practice?
Play songs and work on things that I, and I enjoy.
I try to remember some tunes and how I used to play them and then I mess with the arrangement and stuff like that.
Sometimes, some days, I'll just play
purely for motor skills, to rebuild strength.
So I'll play cannonball rag for an hour.
[C] [Db] [G]
[Bbm] [G] [C] [G] [Bbm] [C] [G]
[C] [Gm] [Em]
[Bbm] [G] [E] [G]
[Am] [Em] [Ebm] Working these muscles here [F] and this here and then the coordination, you know what I [Eb] mean?
So you do that for a while and it really, you really build your strength up.
[F] And then I'll play [G] chords like this,
[Bm] where I'm covering four strings with a little pinky and working all these muscles here, because you [E] need that and then
You [F] don't use any machines or anything?
You've never done anything like [E] that before?
No.
Right.
Nothing, [A] I'm not interested in any of that.
All I'm interested in is this.
Right.
I'm totally dedicated to this and getting these to do what I need them to do.
Right.
[Bbm] And find out where I can go
with it, you know, because in [G] actual fact,
to [Gb] play stuff like what I do in Over the [G] Rainbow,
to get
[E] [G]
[Db]
[G] [Gb]
[F] [Cm] [E]
[Dbm] [N] that kind of clarity,
it not only takes accuracy, but strength in this hand to get the clarity, right?
Yeah.
Because the notes have to ring into one another and there can't be any
buzzes or fluff sound.
[Dbm] That's how I get that clarity.
So how [A] many hours do you rip and you put into working on that particular lick?
I mean, obviously the technique was there long before.
Well, I'm still [B] discovering things.
[Bb] I discovered a way of [A] playing
[E]
[A] [D] a [N] scale of this thing in harmonics.
[D] [A]
[Bb] [E] So I'm always looking for new things
More than that.
