Hello, it's me, the Ukulele Tinker, here to teach you how to play another one of your
favourite songs [N] on the ukulele.
So, grab your uke, make sure it's in tune.
There's a video
in the corner, as always, [C] to help you with that.
[Am] And sit back and [N] relax while I teach
you how to play Wake Me Up by Avicii.
Now this is a pretty simple song and it sounds
really good on the uke.
There's just four chords in it and they're the same four chords
all the way through the song.
So, let's learn those chords.
The first chord you'll need
is the chord of B minor.
For B minor, you need to put your first finger across all four
strings of the second fret.
That's called barring.
You bar the second fret with your
first finger and then with your third finger, you put it two frets above on the fourth fret
of the fourth string.
And you can give that a bit of extra support with your second finger
as well, if it [Bm] helps.
That's the chord of [N] B minor.
The second chord you'll need is the
chord of G.
You probably know it already, but just in case you don't, put your first
finger on the second fret of the third string, your second finger on the second fret of
the first string, and your third finger on the third fret of [G] the second string.
And it
should sound like this.
The [N] third chord you'll need is D.
D is a simple chord.
You put your
first finger on the second fret of the fourth string, your second finger on the second fret
of the third string, and your third finger on the second fret of [D] the second string.
And
it should sound like this.
[C#] And the fourth and [G] final chord is A.
You just put your second
finger on the second fret of the fourth string and your first finger on the [G#] first fret of
the third string.
And [A] it should sound like this.
[C#] Now you've got your four chords, B [Bm] minor,
[G]
[D] G, D, and [A] A.
You can [N] already hear the song starting to come together.
And in fact, that
is the four chords for the intro.
Play those four chords through twice in that order and
that is your intro.
Let me show you the strumming pattern that I use for the song.
It's the
same all the way through the song.
The three bars I play down, down, up, down, down, like
[Bm] this.
[G]
[D] And then [B] on the fourth bar I play down, up, down, down, up, down, like [A] this.
Let me
show you slowly [Bm] for the introduction.
[G] [D] [A]
[Bm] [G] [D]
[A] When you get [Bm] the hang of that pattern you can play
it a bit faster.
[D] [Bm] [G]
[D] [A] And [Cm] that's how to play the intro.
The [F#] verse is very, very similar to
the intro, but instead of B minor, G, D, A, you play B minor, G, D, D.
You [C] stay on that
D for two bars.
Again, you can play the same pattern all the [Bm] way through, like this.
[G]
[D] [Bm] [G]
[D] [E] Play
that four chord sequence all the way from the first [N] line, feeling my way through the
darkness, guided by a beating heart, to the last line of the verse.
They tell me I'm too
young to understand.
Well, that's fine by me.
And that is the verse.
How do we play
the chorus?
It's basically exactly the same as the intro.
So it's back to the B minor,
G, D, A pattern.
But instead of playing it twice, you play it eight times through.
All
the way from, so wake me up when it's all over, when I'm wiser and I'm older, all this
time I was finding myself and I didn't know I was lost.
They're the four lines in the
chorus and they're sung twice through.
And that's how to play the song.
Practice getting
those chord changes down.
Have some fun with the strumming pattern.
And I'll be back again
soon with another lesson for you.
In [C#] the meantime, if you have any requests for future lessons,
please let me know in the comments below.
