Hey, this is Brian with worship tutorials calm.
This is a tutorial for how to play what a friend we have in Jesus
This is our own really simple arrangement of this song
I've been wanting to do a lot of hymns for quite some time because I think hymns are a powerful
Thing to do in worship
I think they've been around for hundreds of years for a reason and there's a lot of rich theology in hymns
Often the melodies that we sing in hymns are very memorable
But they can a lot of times be overly complicated and the way the church has played hymns
Musically in the past a lot of times doesn't fit within a modern contemporary
Worship sound or the culture that you might have in your church.
So
So I've kind of set out on a mission to to simplify hymns and present them in a way that sound so they don't sound
Terribly different than what we do sort of in a modern contemporary
Context and to make the progressions and the chord changes much simpler to play
And so what a friend we have in Jesus is is a great hymn
It's a classic one to start with it's in the key of C
And this one's only three chords and this is going to be exactly the same
Arrangement that you can get at worship tutorials if you click the link below or above
You can get a chord chart for this in all different keys
You can get a multi-track for this in multiple keys and you can hear sort of our album arrangement of it [E] as well
But here are the chords you need to know [C] C
[F] F
And I play this sort of easy variation of [G] F and G and that's it three chords and a plan
All right, so your strumming pattern for this it's in 4-4 time.
This arrangement is 73 BPM and the strumming pattern goes like this
[Eb] down
Down down [Gm] down
one [F]
two three
Four let me slow it down for you down up down up down
down up down [Eb] down up one
[G] two three
Four and that is gonna get you most away through the song.
It's a slow song
So you want to make sure [C] that you you don't strum all you know
All the strums all the time and really vary your dynamics and that'll make a big difference.
The intro goes like this C
to [F] F
[C] to C
to [G] G and
That's [Ab] also the first half of the verse that [C] goes like this.
See what a friend we have in [F] Jesus
back [C] to see all
our sins and [G] griefs to bear G
see
[C] what a
Privilege to [F] carry F
[C] See every to [G] G thing to God [C] in prayer see
Okay.
Now this song this is actually really low
So if this doesn't fit your voice and it's too low
Feel free to do this in the key of D [A] the key of E if you want to but I like to sing it
in this key, [C] I
Actually have a pretty low voice.
So this really feels natural to me.
Okay, it goes like this so intro see
I'm gonna [F] sing the verse for you to [C] F back to C to [G] G.
Here's the verse
[C]
Friendly [F] have in Jesus
[C]
Sins and [G] griefs to bear [C] see what a privilege [F] to carry
[C] [G]
Every
things you got
[C] in prayer and
[G] Then the chorus I call it the chorus
It's kind of an a section or B section or you could call it a verse and a refrain
Which is what a hymnal might call it
But it goes like this G.
Oh
What peace we often [C] forfeit see?
then to F [F] Oh
[C] What needless to see [G] pain we bear G
Back to see [C] all
Because we do not [F] carry F
[C] see every
[G] Thing to God in prayer and then I just repeat the [C] intro see
[F]
[C] [G] Okay, so let's go and play that chorus for you that chorus section Oh what peace we have to forfeit
One piece we [C] often
Forfeit Oh
Needless [G] pain we bear [C] Oh because we [F] do not carry
[C] [G]
Everything to [C] God in prayer is the seat [F] F
[C] see
The [G] G and then you get to verse 2 have we trials?
[C]
We trials [F] and [E] Temptations
Okay, so that's basically it it's just a verse and a chorus or a verse and a refrain
Section and then a little turnaround section to get in between them and then after you play the second chorus.
I like to go back to
The what you could call the first chorus.
So the second chorus would be can we find a friend so faithful?
Who will all our sorrows share?
[C] [E] And then I like to go back to Oh what peace we often forfeit that's [G] what I did in my arrangement Oh
What peace we often?
[C] [B] Forfeit and then to end the song.
I like to just repeat that last line all
Because we do not carry everything [E] to God in prayer and it's just [C] that same C because we [F] do not carry
[C] [G] Everything to God [C] in prayer
[G]
And so it's just a really [N] simple arrangement again
You can go to worship tutorials calm with a link below or up here and see exactly how I put it together to form
This arrangement, so I hope this is helpful
To you if you want to implement some hymns in your church
Make sure you keep checking back as we're gonna be creating more of these and as I do create them
I'm gonna be giving away the resources for a very short period of time
For example in the song video for what a friend we have in Jesus when I released it
It was last week.
I gave away the charts and the
Multitrack for a week.
They're not available for free anymore
But you can certainly still buy them
But if you'd like to know when that when that is happening if you'd like to get those resources and jump on them
When they're out you can sign up for the mailing list, which you can do at worship tutorials calm
There's a link on the sidebar that will allow you to do that and that way you'll always know
When I release them when you can get that free stuff.
Thanks for watching.
See you next time
