Hi everyone, it's Jay Stevens at www _ .iwanttorock.ca. A real quick one for you.
Could be in the
category of you're playing it wrong or you never knew you were playing it wrong. _ _
_ _ Today's
[Bb] _ [G] _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ [G] _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ [G] _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ [N] I'm going to do ZZ Top's Jesus Just Left Chicago.
So to do this right you really need two guitars
_ and one of them is an open G.
So the main rhythm part is an open G thing.
So I've got
_ my Godan Core prototype tuned open G.
_ That's from the thickest string down D G D G B D.
Got it?
_ _ If you're unsure about open G type stuff I do have a video I link to _ right about
here that _ is my Keith Richards open G 5 string open G tuning.
_ It'll really help you with
chord shapes and stuff because this song actually uses two Keith Richards chord shapes
which I'll show you again now. _
So there's one guitar [Bb] doing the in standard tuning going
_ _ [G] _ _ _ doing that part and all the little filler riffs and then the _ open G part _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ [Bb] is doing that.
So what I like to do is combine the both because I can [G] go. _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ [G] _ _ _ [C] _
_ [G] So I'll show you the chords first
and I'll show you the little riff that he starts with.
So the first chord open G is
an open G.
_ _ _ _ Can't make that any easier.
Basically again an open G I'm not playing the top string
because the top string is a D instead of G and when I'm playing in G D gets confusing.
So I'm just playing from the fifth string down _ _ [E] and then the classic Keith Richards chord
shape is going to be [C] _ _ [Bb] picture it like you're trying to do just a normal C chord.
So it's
going to be first finger on the second string [G] first fret _ middle finger on the fourth string
second fret.
That's your shape.
_ [C] _ _ _ _ So that's our second chord.
So it's just going from
the open to that.
So you got to get really used to throwing down those two fingers with
[G] the one open G string the third string up in between [Em] it.
So again I mean great practice
for this sort of stuff is just [C] doing that _ _ _ _ just to get used to it.
[G] So we got _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ four [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [C] _ _
_ _ times
just like that.
Then we're going to go up to this fifth fret and I'm going to bar across
the same strings same five strings again I'm not really playing the top string but I can
bar it anyways _ _ _ _ which happens to be by the time we're up here at the fifth fret in open
G we're playing a C chord.
[N] And then I'm going to add the Keith Richards thing to it.
So
it's second string at the sixth fret _ and the fourth string at the seventh fret.
Again it's
the same shape from down here that sort of C shape but now because I'm using my first
finger I'm using middle and ring finger for the extra notes which is the classic Keith
Richards.
[C] _ [G] _ _ [C] _ _ [F] _ _
[C] _ Again you can check out my other video on the Keith Richards stuff for that
sort of shape but that's the shape and that's like that's all we're using.
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ _ [G]
Back to the open
G.
_ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _
[G] All right so so far we've got four of that rhythm at the open G position two at the fifth
fret C you go back to the open [A] and you do it three times which seems odd but it works.
So
you do it three times and then we're going to go up barring the second fret which gives us an A
_ _ _ _ _ to the [C] fifth fret C _ to _ [Dm] the [G] open.
_ _ _ So [A] I got _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ [G] I _
_ _ _ _ _ [Bb] _ [Gm] tend to chug along on the fifth and fourth string
because there is that that happening there's that rock _ eighth notes going on.
_ _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ So _ that's basically
it.
I'll play the whole thing one time and then I'll show you a bonus riff at the end of this. _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ [C] _ _ _ [G] _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F] _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ _
_ [F] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ _ [G] _ [A] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ [Em] _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [G] _ _
[C] _ [F] _ [Em] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [G] _ _
_ [F] _ _ [Em] _ _ [Eb] _ [Bb] _ [G] _
_ [Am] _ _ _ [Em] _ [Eb] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
All right a little sloppy on my part but I'm playing the _ the non the standard tuning guitar
part basically the non open G guitar [Ab] part in open G which creates a bit of a stretch.
But the first
one you got is this.
I'm going to add this to [Bb] our our rhythm part.
_ [G] _ _ _
_ [C] _ So [G] _ _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ [G] _ _ _
[F] you get the _ _ again that's the
standard tuning part normally he's playing like _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
doing that and just holding it.
So what I do is
I go across the [Bb] third fret.
[G] _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ I'm playing [G] I'm really playing like the third and fourth string at the
third fret.
_ You could just play the third string by itself but it sounds a little [Bb] thin so I tend
to bar across those two strings.
_ _ And that's all I'm playing is that three the open I'm going to
hit is the start of the rhythm part.
[G] _
_ [C] That's _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ [C] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [G] _ _
_ [C] _ _ [A] all I'm doing there.
For the ending after the _ _ [C] _ _
so [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ [Em] _ _ [Eb] _ _ [G] _ _ _
[Dm] _ [G] _ that
part there after that [A] _
[C] _ _ [G] two to five after the open _ I _ _ [Gm] get that part happening and then _ _ [B] _ _ _
[Bb] fifth string
I'm hitting open _ to slide [G] the fourth [B] _ and then pluck the open _ [G] third string up the open G _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
and
_ _ then back to the the open fifth and fourth string. _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] So _ _ _
[C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Cm] _ _ [Em] _ [Eb] here's [Bb] _
_ the part that's a little bit harder
because of the stretch in the open G tuning.
But we're going to hold down the first string at the
fifth fret and then on the fourth string I'm going to go to the third fret and this [G] is the
one that moves we're just going to chromatically move down three two one while holding that fifth
on the bottom.
_ [F] _ _ [Em] _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ _ And I'm going back and forth I use a pick and fingers for this but you could definitely
I skip strings with the pick.
[F] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _
So I'm going to start from the high note [C] _ _
so [Bb] _ I was [C] one four one four _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ _
and
[Gb] I kind of reverse this here when I change it's going to go [C]
four one four one.
_ [F] _ _ [Em] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [Cm] _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ [G] So actually a good
way to look at it is you _ hit the one first string fifth fret and then [F] play the third fret and go
back and forth.
So I'm going to pick string wise _ one and then four one four _ and then you move down
in the second fret and go four one four [C] first fret four one four. _ _ _
[Em] _ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _ And sorry the last one when you get
to that big stretch I know it's a that's a huge stretch some of you might not [G] be able to make
that one to fifth fret stretch.
_ _ But that one we're going to cut short we go pick the four pick the
one _ [Eb] and _ _
[Bb] then go back to the bar three.
[G] _ _
_ [F] _ _ _ [Em] _ _ _ [Ab] _
_ [Bb] _ [G] _ _ [Bb] _ _ [Em] _ _
[Eb] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ [Em] _ _
[Eb] _ _ [G] _ _ [Cm] _ _ [Em] _ _
[Eb] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _
All right so that's a little bonus riff for you.
_ Hopefully
it's not too bad for you.
[N] _ The open G is the easy part for this song it's just the rhythm track
basically _ _ _ the solos and everything are in standard tuning even the _ riff I was talking about that riff
is standard tuning.
But it's nice to play an open G you got a guitar tuned to open G.
Might as well
play it the way it actually goes.
