Hi, George here.
Welcome to this video where I show you how I play Alice Cooper's 18 on guitar and harmonica.
Okay, I'm going to go through the guitar chords, go through that signature riff and the rhythm
and how that's played.
There's two different vocal parts on the chorus and I'll show you each of those and go through
the harmonica, the key I'm using and what I'm doing on that.
And then finally, we'll play through the whole thing.
Okay?
So starting off with the guitar chords, it starts in E minor, it goes to [C] C, [D] to D, [Em] back
to E minor.
Okay?
And the chords for [Am] the bridge are A minor, B [Bm] minor.
Now if you can't play the B minor with the bar, you can play it like this,
[C] C and [D] D.
Those
are the chords for the bridge.
[G] [E] Okay, now the opening riff.
Let me just play through it here.
[Em] [G]
[A] [C] [D] [Em]
[G] [C] [D] [E]
So for the opening riff, we're starting in E minor.
Going to play the sixth string open, so just sound the E and then strum the chord.
So that's one, two.
One, [Em] two.
And then [E] we're going to pick the E, sixth string open, and play [F#] F sharp, which is sixth
string second fret, [G] to G, sixth string third fret, [A] and we're going to play A, which is
the fifth string open.
[E] So [G] [A] [C] we're going to play the C chord.
The D.
[D]
[Em] [G] [C] [D]
[G] [E] Okay, so the counting on this, it's one, [Em]
two, three [G] and [A] four.
[C] And one and two, [D]
three and [E] four.
[Em] [F#] [G]
[C] [D] [E]
So the 18, the chorus.
The first time they go through it, the chorus starts on the E.
Eighteen and I don't know what I want.
[G] The second time, it goes on the G.
Eighteen and I don't know what I want.
[Em]
Eighteen, I gotta get away.
That sort of idea.
Okay, so starting on two different [E] pitches.
First time through, it starts on the E.
Eighteen.
[G] Second time through, it starts on the G.
Eighteen.
[E]
Now for the harmonica, key of E minor, which is the relative minor for G.
I'm not playing a G harmonica here.
I'm playing a C, so I'm playing like second position.
And that gives me the notes I need just for that little intro run that goes on.
So I like to do that at the beginning and sometimes in the middle, sometimes in the end.
Let's see.
So one thing I like to do with this song is you can make great use of dynamics.
So it's got this opening riff, so that sounds great.
And you can play that loud.
And then when the verses come in, you can bring it down, tune down on the guitar, just
tone it down a bit and then slowly build until you get back to the chorus and then you can
kind of let it loose again.
Okay, so let's try that.
Let's play through this.
Keep in mind the dynamics and just have some fun with it.
One, two, three, four.
[G] [A] [C]
[D] [Em] [G] [C]
[D] [Am] [Bm]
[C] [G] [D]
[Em] [C]
[D] Lines [Em] form [C] on my face [D] and hands.
[Em] Lines form [C] from the ups [D] and downs.
[C] I'm in the middle [D]
without any plans.
[Em] I'm a boy [C] and I'm a [D] man.
[Em] I'm 18 [G] [C] and I don't know what I [D] want.
[Em] 18, [G] [A] I just [C] don't know what I [D] want.
[Em] [G] 18, [C] I gotta get [D] away.
[Am] I gotta [Bm] get out of this place.
[C] I'll go running [D] in outer space [Em] again.
[G] [C]
[D] I [Em] got a baby's brain [C] and an old [D] man's heart.
[Em] Took 18 years [C] to get this [D] far.
[C] Don't always know [D] what I'm talking about.
[Em] Feels like I'm living [C] in the middle [D] of doubt.
[Em] 18, I [C] get confused [D] every day.
[Em] 18, [G] I [C] just don't know what [D] to say.
[Em] 18, [G] [C] I gotta get [D] away.
[Am] [D]
[C] [D]
[Em] Whoa, lines form [C] on my face and [D] my hands.
[Em] Lines form from [C] the left [D] and right.
[C] I'm in the middle, [D] the middle of life.
[Em] I'm a boy [C] and I'm a [D] man.
I'm 18 [Em] and I like it.
[G] [C] [D]
Yes, [Em] I like [G] it.
[C] [D]
[Em] Well, I like it, [C] love it, like [D] it, love [Em] it.
18, 18, [C] 18, [D] [Em] 18 and I like it.
[C] [D] [Am]
[D] [C]
[D] [Em]
[G] [C] [D]
[Em]
Alright, so that's Alice Cooper's 18.
That's how I play it on guitar and harmonica.
Hope you enjoyed the video and you can use that to put that great song together.
We'll see you next time.
Have a great day.
[A] Peace.
