[F] Welcome to the New Song Cafe at worshiptogether [Eb].com.
Today we have Chris Tomlin sharing his new [Gm] song, I Will Follow.
Hope you enjoy this [F] new song cafe.
Chris and Daniel, great to have you guys.
Thank you.
Today we're listening to [Am] a song called I Will Follow [N] and very cool.
I'm really excited to hear this because I want to hear the acoustic rendition because
the recording has got a really pronounced drum loop in it.
Some people listening to it may think, you know what, I can't pull that off in church.
But I've heard you do it once before acoustically and it's actually really accessible.
So talk a little bit about this song and kind of how it was written.
This song I was writing again, I was writing with a friend, Jason Ingram, and I'd been
connected with this guy.
They said, man, he's a wonderful songwriter.
Once you guys connect, you guys will be just like kindred hearts.
You'll go in there and it's going to be great.
So I was excited about it.
We met and he said, we were working on some songs, just ideas, throwing ideas back and forth.
He said, hey, I've got this song that I've written with Reuben Morgan.
And I thought, my ears perked up because Reuben and I had written Awakening together.
And also he's one of the most prolific songwriters in the church and the world.
And Reuben, he'll song.
And I was like, man, I'd love to hear that.
And he played me this.
And he had this chorus and this verse.
And I was like, man, I love that.
I mean, I was like, that is so immediate.
There are songs that you take a while, that you're going to love it about five listens.
But then there's songs, first listen, you're like, oh, man, that's great.
And it had this driving beat that I was looking forward to.
I was really wanting stuff that had a lot of energy and beat and we were trying to write that way.
So I was pretty excited about it.
And with the beat, and that's what's amazing about this song, is it can be, because the
beat's so strong, like you said, and because it's so in your face, people think, oh, I
can never do that in my church.
My church is like not that.
We don't go that way.
That'd be a bit too much.
But the song, just on acoustic guitar, it speaks for itself, which I think you'll hear.
And I think we did an acoustic version on the Deluxe record as well, which you'll hear,
that I just really love because the song translates so well.
And so the crazy thing about this song is it's such, because the beat is so strong,
like you said, the lyrics can kind of get lost.
And they're saying it.
It's saying it in a pretty incredible thought, that God, wherever you lead, where you move,
I'm moving.
Who you love, which is the world, which is some of the unlovely people I'm loving, who
you serve, which is the least of these in the world, that's who I want to serve.
And if I lose my life, I'll follow you.
So behind that beat are those lyrics.
And so it's pretty incredible.
So this is kind of how it goes on the acoustic guitar.
And it's, I think it translates pretty well.
So we'll give it a shot.
Here we go.
One, two, ready.
[Gm] [Eb] [C]
[F]
[Eb] All your ways are [Gm] good, all your ways are [F] sure.
I will trust in [Eb] you alone.
Higher than [Gm] my side, higher above my [F] life.
I will trust in you [Bb] alone.
[F] [Gm] Where you go, I'll [Eb] go.
Where you stay, I'll [F] stay.
When you move, I'll [F] move.
I will follow [Gm] you.
Who you love, [Eb] I'll love.
How you serve, I'll [F] serve.
With the life I lose, I will follow [Gm] you.
[Eb] I will follow [F] you.
[Eb]
[F] In you, life [Gm] everlasting.
[Eb]
[F] In you, freedom for [Eb] my soul.
[F] In you, joy, [Gm] [F] unending joy.
I will [Gm] follow.
[Eb] [Bb]
[C] [F] [Gm]
[Eb] One thing that's really interesting about this song that we found when playing it live,
that bridge just really opens up lyrically in a really good way.
When you say in you, there's life everlasting, there's freedom for my soul.
And so when we lead it, we just double that.
We'll lead the bridge two or three times.
Just keep, and just keep building it.
[G] In you.
And you can even come back to it in a song, you know, in that moment.
So I think this song has a lot of, it's just an easy song to go different places with.
Absolutely.
Walk us through, for the folks that are watching, kind of what you're playing.
It seems like it's pretty easy to play.
You're in the key of B flat.
B flat, yes.
Playing in G configuration.
Playing in G configuration, and Daniel's playing the A configuration on the acoustic.
So it's, you know, I love it because the chorus starts on a minor.
And when the chorus starts on minors, they're just really big and strong.
And so it [Gm] starts on this E minor.
That's the chorus.
[Eb] To C, [Bb]
G, [C] D.
[Gm]
[A] And that's the opening as well.
[Eb] And the verse is just C.
All your ways are [Gm] good, E minor, all your ways are sure.
[G]
And then you walk down, I will trust in you alone.
[F] [Eb]
Back to the C.
[Gm] [F] Very simple.
The bridge, I mean, [Bb] if it's, I'm not, again, if it's complicated, I wouldn't be in this.
Daniel would be showing you all these things, [Eb] not me.
And [Bb] [Ab] so that's pretty much all there is to it, really.
And the bridge, again, is just C, G, D, and E minor as well.
It's just arranged a little differently.
But those four chords can get you around the song pretty easily.
And hearing it acoustically, it's amazing how accessible it sounds just with you guys doing it.
So I know there will [F] be a lot of folks.
Yeah, just get somebody who's got a percussion thing, gets the beat going,
and just the acoustic guitars.
It's really, really a fun song to play.
And it's a great song for people to sing just what it says.
Yeah, absolutely.
Well, guys, thanks for coming by.
We [Gm] appreciate it.
Where you go, I'll [Eb] go.
Where you stay, [Bb] I'll stay.
When you move, [F] I'll move.
I will follow [Gm] you.
Who you love, [Eb] I'll love.
