Start Jamming...
Hello everybody, my name is Dan Zanes and we're back for episode number two of what I would like to call
Family Band Workshop
What exactly is that?
Well, I believe that every family should have its own band every neighborhood should have its own series of bands
In other words, there should be bands everywhere people making music casually with each other
I've been putting out all ages music for the last 10 years
We put out 10 CDs and to start off the series of Family Band Workshop lessons
I'm gonna do a song from each CD.
So we're moving now to CD number two, which is called family dance a
song called Wonder Wheel
right, we're gonna do the guitar for this one and
It's three chords.
Most of them are I'm gonna explain my system here the thumb
Has its own symbol
First finger has its symbol second third fourth.
I'm going to show you now the chords
the C chord fairly basic, although I
Like to play the C chord with all four fingers
So that I've got the two fingers here on the bottom
That means you don't have to move your finger back and forth when you're alternating your bass notes.
There's the C chord
Here's the F chord
Sometimes people kick and scream and they see this kind of F chord, but I would like to
Recommend giving it a try
Because once you get it
You don't have to move your hand around that much at all going from a C chord to an F chord because you're using the thumb
On the low E.
It looks a little awkward at first
But unless your hand is unusually small you can get it.
All right
[A] [Em] And the G chord [Abm] I would recommend using the second [Em] third and fourth fingers for the G chord like this
Leaves your first finger free
You can move easily to the [G] C chord from the G
[Gb] [C]
And you [G] can also do things like this
All right.
So wonder wheels in the key of C.
So it's gonna [C] be C F and G
I'm gonna use on my on my right hand.
I'm not gonna use a pick
We'll get into the pick for a minute, but I always prefer to use my hands whenever possible
All right.
Well, I'm assuming that a lot of you know how to play some guitar already
[Em] Although this is kind of a beginner's lesson.
One of the things that's going on is that we're doing some bass note runs and
Another thing is we're doing some hammer-ons
[C] Take it right from the verse
I went to [F] a weekend [C] fair [G] met someone [C] while I was there
So right there were climbing from [G] the G
[A] [G] [C]
[G] Climbing from the G back to the C.
So you're playing your G chord [A] [B] [C]
back up to the C chord
[F]
[C] [G] I Hear
Wonder [C] we so that's it.
Each time [Fm] I go from the G to C
I'm climbing up and [C] then I'm climbing from the C up to the F [G] going [F] in
And [C] around so that's just [Em] [F] [C]
there's one [G] other bass run [F] which is going
[C]
Around
[G] Fix me up now here.
We're going from the G, but we're going [A] up [Bb] [B]
[C] to the C.
So those are notes are playing
[G] [A] [B] [C] That's what we used [Bb] to play, but we're gonna add this note
[E] [G]
[A] [Bb] [B] [C] And [G] this is just to show you some of the basic possibilities of bass note runs
They're endless endless variations
Okay, one other thing I want to show you in the course as I mentioned before a hammer-on where you hit the note [E] and
You hit your [G] finger down [E]
and you get a second [D] note
[E] We're doing it here with the C chord
Hitting the [D] D [E] note
[C] Open and then hammering on that [D] [E] note make [D] it any
[C] [F] going
[C]
Around
So that's where I'm using it the hammer-ons can be used all over the [F] place
They're just a great a great flavor to add to any tune one more time going Around
[C]
Takes
[G] us
[C] down
There's another hammer-on.
[F] I love the sides and I [C] love sound
[G] [A]
[Bb] [G] Riding on
Wonder [C] we
So there's really not a lot going on.
There's just everything repeats
And so those are some of the basic moves in the song Wonder Wheel.
I'll take it one more time from the top
I'll sing the
second verse I
Look [Em] left [F] and now look [C] right.
[G] I saw her smile [C] and it was bright like the Sun [F] that kind [C] of light
[G] We're all wonder [C] we
Never thought I'd go so high
[G] Thought I'd [C] laugh till I cried I could reach [F] it [C] touch the [G] sky wonder [C] we
[Em] Going [F] around
[C]
Takes [G] us up
Takes [C] us down.
I
[Em] Love [F] the signs and I love [C]
sounds
[G]
Riding on
Wonder [C] we
So
[G] there I did a double hammer-on at the end
[C]
All right, just to try it one time at the pick
Those of you that are [G] completely committed to [F] the use of [Ab] the [C] plastic
Notice that I'm alternating bass notes whenever possible, which is it's almost always
Just why I like to play this version of a C chord.
I don't have to think about it at all
[F] [C]
[G] That's someone [C] well I was there he put flowers in our [G] hair
[C] So begins [Em] [F] [C] another [G] day
Crazy stops [C] along the way think of funny [F] [C] things to [G] say, right?
[C]
[F] Going around
[C] Around takes
[G] us [D] up
[Bb] [G] Takes [C] us down
I love [F] the signs and I [C] love sounds
[G] Riding [D] on
[Bb] [B] Wonder [C] we
All right, there's the Wonder Wheel good luck with your family band
