[A] Hey friends, Joe here at Reverb.com checking out some riffs [B] in the key of Mark Knopfler.
Mark has a very interesting [A] style of playing.
[Db] He uses his thumb and first two [E] fingers.
It's been really challenging for me to even attempt at trying to get some of the
snappiness and some of that [G] character that Knopfler [Gb] gets on these records.
[Eb] The first riff we're going to attempt is the opening from Southbound Again [Bb] from the Dire [A] Straits self-titled record.
It's all going to be on the A, [Bm] D, and G strings.
So your thumb is going to be positioned on the low A and then it's actually going [C] to move to the D as well.
And then your first two [Bm] fingers are going to be on
[A] D and G respectively.
Okay, and the first move [D] of the riff is going to be kind of our open A chord position here.
We are going to be staying away from the third though.
[Bb] So we're just going to be on the second fret of the D and G strings [C] here.
Okay, [Bb] open A with the thumb first and then followed [D] by a click mute [Bb] with the [A] fingers.
And then,
thumb as [C] well as fingers grabbing the D and G [A] strings on the second fret.
[C] Going up to fifth fret,
[Am]
there's another little click mute with the thumb on the D string [Db] before hitting the fifth [A] fret.
[C]
[Am]
So you hear those two click mutes.
[A] One there and then another one.
[C]
[Am]
So the [Bb] tricky part here [A] is
we're
[B] [Eb] going to now we're going to alternate thumb on the downbeats [Bb] and fingers on the upbeats. Okay, [D] and
[Db] we're going to try to get the thumb to cross [D] the D and G strings [Db] and
then to be able to snap the upbeats with the fingers as well.
[C] Okay?
[D] [A]
[Am]
[A] [C]
[A]
[C]
[D]
[Db] Let's take a closer look at just maybe [Eb] muting the strings and [Cm] taking a [Db] closer look at just the [A] finger picking technique [Bb] down here.
[B] One, two, three, four.
[Bb]
[A] [B] [D]
[Bb]
[Db]
One, two, three, [Am] four.
[A]
[Bb] Once you get up [C] and once you're going, once you're moving with it and trying other things with it,
that's where more magic [Am] for you is going to happen, right?
[C]
[Am] [D]
[A]
[Bm] [A]
Throwing stuff around and licks that you [C] know and licks that [Bm] are maybe habitual [C] for you down here and
throwing in with a new technique over here sometimes [Bb] unlocks [Bbm] a
massively, you know, eye-opening thing for [Am] you.
If it's any [B] consolation to you,
I'm going to be working on this [A] just as you are to try to get my thumb to
cross over to grab that G string as well as just the D.
So we can work on this together [B] and
hope you got something out of this lesson.
