Hey guys, it's Matt here with Acoustic Selection.
I'm going to teach you a great, great song for beginners.
And you can use these same techniques to apply to so many songs.
The [D] song's called I Can Only Imagine.
It's going to use three chords, the D chord,
[G] the G chord, and the [A] A chord.
[C#] Now the way you play [F#m] those, if you're [C] just starting out, I marked the C notes.
If you don't have those marked, [C#] find the two black keys and [C] go one to the left, and there's your C.
And then it goes [D] C, D, [C] E, F, G.
Another way, C, [B] B, A.
And so forth, up and down the violin, the guitar, the piano.
[D] So for your D chord,
use your thumb and find the two black keys right in between.
Play this white key here, and then [Dm] every other note.
But take this first [D] finger up to an F sharp.
So that's the chord you're going to start out with, is the D.
For [G] the G, find this key right here and play every other white key.
There's your G.
And for the A,
go [Am] one over every other white [Fm] key, but again, [C#m] just like the D chord, move this [A] up to the sharp.
So there's your three chords.
Start out with just your right hand.
[D] Only imagine
What it would be like
[G] When I walk
So you want a D to a G.
By your side
I can only imagine
[D] What my eyes will see
[G] When your face
Is before me
I can only [D] imagine
This is good, so the whole verse is just D and G.
Then it's gonna be for [G] that chorus.
Surrounded by your glory
G to [Em] A.
What will [A] my life be?
Will [D] I dance for you?
That's a D.
Will all of you be still?
Will [G] I stand in your presence?
To [C#] my knees will I fall?
[A] [D] Will I sing hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak it all?
I can [G] only imagine
I [A] can only [D] imagine
I can only imagine
So once you learn that right hand,
[Bm] do the same thing with [G] the left hand.
But let's say for example,
if I'm playing [D] a D chord up here,
I'm gonna play a D here,
but you don't have to, if you want to,
you can play the full chord,
or you can play just your thumb and your ring finger.
Simply the D and the A key.
So you can see that really rich sound.
And that allows you to go back and forth.
Any pattern you want.
Then [G] the G,
you play a G chord here,
then a G and a D here.
You can play the full G,
or just the G and D, either way.
So again, for that verse, it goes
[D] I can only imagine
I can only imagine
There will be a light
[G] When I walk
By your side
I can only imagine
[D] What my eyes will see
When [G] your face
Is before me
I can only imagine
[D]
I can [G] only imagine
I can only imagine
So then, you know,
the chords, the same thing.
You might want to learn the right hand first,
then your left hand, then work on combining them.
Surrounded
Surrounded by [A] your
Surrounded by your glory
[Em] What will you see
[G]
Surrounded by your glory
Surrounded by your glory
[Em] What will [A] my heart feel
When I [D] dance
For you, Jesus
When all of you Be still
When [G] I stand in your presence
[A] To my knees
Will I fall
[D] Will I sing, hallelujah
Will I be able to speak
At all, I can [G] only Imagine
I [A]
can only [D] imagine
After you get more,
so learn first the chords, [G] the D,
[C#] G and A [G] chord,
then learn with your left hand,
and you can see how I get a pattern, maybe I'll do
everything, then just the right hand.
Now, if you get more advanced,
this is all down the road, let's say for a G,
you can do a high G.
Surrounded by your
Glory, [Em] what will
[A] my heart feel
When I [D] dance for you, Jesus
When all of you
Be still, [G] when I stand
In your presence
[A] To my knees, will I fall
[E] Will I [D] sing, hallelujah
Will I be able to speak
At all, I can [G] only Imagine
[A] I [D] can only imagine
As you can see,
learn these techniques, learn these simple chords,
and you can apply it to so many songs.
