So this song is about my mom's parents, the Williams side of the family is always focused on.
And I'm very proud that Hank Williams is my grandpa, but he died in 1952 and my grandmother shortly thereafter.
So the grandparents that I knew and spent so much time with were Warren and June White.
They were married for 58 years and I wrote this song for my papa and my granny.
Every word is true.
This is called Waiting on June.
She was from North Louisiana in the town of Marooch
I fell in love in a week or [F#] two, it didn't take long to love a girl [C#] like that
We were banning tin in the cotton fields, playing horseshoe with the colored [F#] kids
I tried to kiss her, she grabbed a [C#] baseball bat
Hey I was waiting [F#] on June, [C#] [F#] I hope she comes [C#] to see me
I'm waiting on June, I can't take this feeling
I'm waiting [F#] on June, I pray to God she'll love me
One of these [A#m] days, I hope I find my [G#] way
Waiting on June, I went off in 42 to fight those boys and pay my [F#] dues
Her wallet [G#] picture kept my [C#] spirits high
Charlie boy died in my arms, he saw Jesus, I saw [A#m] blood
It soaked her [C#] wallet picture that cold night
[G#m] Well I told my best friend Charlie [F#] I would kiss his [C#] girls goodbye
[D#] He made me promise I'd go [G#] home and make Miss June [C#] my wife
[G#m] Shaken like a drunk old fool, [F#] I hopped off of [C#] that plane
[A#m] And I ran home to ask her in the rain
[F#]
Waiting on June, I hope that she says yes
I'm [C#] waiting on June, in her faded summer dress
I'm [A#m] waiting on June, her daddy shook my hand
And she lit up the moment I [G#] pulled out that silver band
Waiting on June, well we married at the Methodist church
Found a big white cow and a piece of [F#] dirt with pecan trees to build our [C#] homestead on
Joel and Becky then Donna then Shelby
Our tiny house was a sanctuary, [F#] left to fill [C#] those rooms all day long
Hey we were [G#] waiting on June, [F#] she's putting on her makeup
Waiting on June, she's trying to get her hair curled
[G#] Waiting on June, [F#] kids listen to me
[A#m] You all come down to Sunday school, [G#] I'll be there in 15
[C#] Waiting on June, well the time flew by like a setting wood
Yeah the kids grew fast and the farm did [G#] good
And Miss Bertha made our supper [C#] every day
At noon that silver bell would ring
We'd all say grace and dig on in
We [F#] always ate together [C#] in those days
[G#] Oh one by one those kids [F#] went off and found a love [C#] their own
[G#] There's nothing like the joy I knew [F#] when they brought their [C#] babies home
We'd [G#] play all day in the cotton [F#] fields with the dogs I raised [C#] up right
And [A#m] in Grandma's kitchen every [G#] night
Waiting on June, [F#] honey don't burn the bacon
[C#] Our bellies are aching, [F#] waiting on June
She turns that fork so slow
[A#m] And we all had to sit there [G#] till the last bite was no more
[C#] Waiting on June
We were slower than we used to be
The nurse in home told June and [F#] me that we'd have separate [C#] rooms
Side by side
[G#m] Oh what I'd give for one more [F#] night of [C#] sleeping with my wife
Since [G#m] 45 I've touched her skin in [F#] the middle of the [C#] night
So [G#] I'm lying in this single bed [F#] until they cut [C#] those lights
[A#m] That's when she'll sneak in and I'll [F#] be [C#] fine
[A#m] I'm waiting on June
So we can kiss goodnight
[C#] I'm waiting on June
I'll hold her hand so tight
I'm waiting [F#] on June
I'll love her till I die
[A#m] It's bittersweet when love grows old [G#m] and you really miss your wife
[C#] Waiting on June
Well they buried me last Tuesday morning
The good Lord came, he took me home
I closed my eyes, [F#] I quickly went [C#] away
[A#m] But the angels let me see her every [C#] day
[F#]
Waiting on June
High mansion is so grand
[C#] Waiting on June
Footprints in the sand, [A#m] waiting on [F#] June
That's the story of my [A#m] life
Me and Jesus are standing here till she [G#] walks through that [C#] light
Waiting on June
Hey I'm still waiting on [G#] June
I'm [F#]
always waiting [C#] on June
There's no more waiting on [G#] June
[C#] [F#]
