Howdy there folks, my name is [N] Ryan Kim and you are at MusicWithRyan.com.
Today's lesson is going to be Blackberry Blossom for all you flat pickers out there.
This is a pretty big tune so I'm going to say it's probably an intermediate arrangement.
But if you haven't played it before and you want to dive in, I'm going to walk through
it measure by measure for you to give you a chance to learn this tune.
So let's go ahead first and listen to the arrangement I've created.
So here we go.
[G]
[E]
[B] [D]
[A] [G]
[Em] [Bm] [A]
[D] [Em] [A]
[G] [E]
[Em] [E]

[E] [G]
Alright as you see, a lot of eighth notes, you know this, I really couldn't make an easier
arrangement just because the melody [N] just kind of has that line with lots of eighth notes
and that's just kind of the way the tune goes.
So it's a big tune if you haven't got some of this down up stuff going on.
But if you do or even if you haven't, I'm going to walk through it again really slow
measure by measure so you can see exactly what I'm doing in my left and right hands
and master this tune.
So and if you like this, I'd ask you to go over to my website which I'm really proud
of, I've been working really hard on and MusicWithRyan.com and you can check out the full length lesson
and get the video, about 20 minutes of this video and tabs for this tune and backing tracks
all in one package.
And I've got some other material over there that I think is really great as well, my e-book
and other arrangements.
So please do check that out and for now though we're going to go ahead and walk through Blackberry
Blossom a couple measures at a time [G] real slow and up close.
So here we go.
Alright so go ahead and get your tabs out in front of you or you can check out on the
screen there and go through Blackberry Blossom here a couple measures at a time in the key
of G so no capo needed.
And again this tune is so popular at the jam [C] but it's often, you know, it's a pretty big
tune and the melody, there's no easy way around it, it's a lot of consecutive eighth notes
so it's kind of a big tune I guess.
And it takes a lot of practice to be able to get [G] this tune up to speed, up to the jam circle speed.
So take it slow and closely watch the pick direction.
I have, [E] everything's pretty straight ahead, just some kind of bluesy ending licks on the
last couple measures of each section but the melody is very straight ahead I feel.
It's just a few hammer-ons and pull-offs to kind of keep you on your toes so you can get
an idea with those, what to do with those.
So it starts on beat 2, I've got a little pick up there and again the numbers on the
top of the staff are fingers, 1, 2, 3, 4 and the symbols below the staff are the pick direction.
So let's start it.
It starts on a little pick up on beat 2 so it should be like 1, [D]
[E] [F#]
you see I'm using my
first and my third finger just [D] like is indicated there above the staff.
[E] [F#m]
[G] [B] [A] [G] [F#m]
[G] [F#m] Okay, I'm just going to stop right there.
So it's all kind of happening in the second and fourth fret on [A] the G and the D and I'm
using my first finger and my third finger to kind of do all that.
So I'm not, some people might use their pinky here and that's totally cool.
I like to use my third finger and that's the way I got it marked.
[D] So [E] [F#]
[G]
[A] [G] [F#] and on an upstroke right there, that's an F sharp note on [D] the D string.
[E] [F#]
[G] [B] [A] [G]
[F#] [A] [G] [F#]
[E]
[D] [F#m]
[F#] So all eighth notes alternate [D] picking.
[G] [E] [F#m]
And then going on, I've [E] got a hammer on in the next measure, [F#m] 2 to [E] 4.
If you're not used to going, it's kind of a big leap for [F#] hammer ons, you might have
to practice that [E] if you're not used to that.
[F#]
Getting a clean sound [D#] and then that creates again a double pick direction, [E] in this case double down.
So make sure you [F#m] down, [E] down [D] and then [A]
[B] two upstrokes right there.
Pull off up on the two again and just bring my second finger back to [E] it.
[G] [E] [B]
I used my first that time.
Either one [Dm] is fine.
[E]
[B] [E] I'll probably use my first.
[B]
Those first two [G#] and a half measures there.
One.
[D] [E] [F#]
[G] [E]
[G] [D] [B]
And again, the hammer ons and [G] the pull offs, they want to be equal duration.
Otherwise, your timing is going to get off.
[E] I mention this a lot, but I just want to be clear.
[A] [E] [F#m] One [G] and
[D] [B] [A] four.
[B] [A] Not in this [F#] case.
Not this time [Bm] around.
It can be [E] done.
[B]
[D] [E]
