How To Play Roger McGuinn (Byrds) Mr Tambourine Man (intro riff only) chords
Start Jamming...
We're taking a look at Mr Tambourine Man as Roger McGuinn plays it acoustically these
days.
And by the way, if you want to play it electrically on the electric 12-string,
this part is pretty much exactly what he plays on the electric as well.
I'm playing it on a 6-string, of course you can either play it on a 12.
He now uses a
7-string guitar with the double string just on the 3rd string, specially made by Martin.
So you might have one of those about your person as well.
But it works fine on a 6-string.
First of all, to play it the way he does today, we down-tune by half a step, which really
helps with singing it.
So tune your 1st string down [D#] to D-sharp, [A#] 2nd string down to A-sharp,
[F#] 3rd string down to F-sharp, [C#] 4th string down to C-sharp, [G#] 5th string down to G-sharp, 6th
[D#] string down to D-sharp.
[F] If you don't want to do that, it will work in standard tuning,
but I'm down-tuned by a half step, which is how he does it these days.
And we kick into
the [C#] famous intro.
[D#m]
[C#] [D#m] [C#]
[D#m] [C#]
[D#m] [F#]
[G#] So we're on a D-chord, this is all around a D-chord, hold down a
normal D-shape.
Bar 1 of the tab, we're playing the 4th [C#] string, this is all picked with a
pick.
[G#] 3rd string, 4th [C#] string again, 3rd string at the 4th [A#m] fret, [F#] at the [G#] 2nd fret, and [F#] open,
and the 4th [E] string at the [F] 4th fret.
[C#] That's bar 1.
1, 2, [A#m] and 3, [G#] [F#] and [Fm] 4, and, 4, and, 4,
[D#] Now have your index finger replace the little finger on the 4th string at the 2nd fret.
Play 4, 3 should be [D#m] open, 2 at the 3rd fret, and again those 3 notes, 4th string, 3rd string,
2nd string, then 4th string [C#] open, [D#m] to 2nd fret, which will send the music back round to begin
the riff again.
So that's bar 2.
1, and 2, [F#] and 3, and [D#m] 4, and.
So bars 1 and 2 combined
are [C#] the main riff of the song.
Let me play that again slowly.
1, 2, [A#m] and 3, [C#] [F#] and 4, [Fm] [D#m] and
1, and 2, and 3, and 4, and [C#] repeat.
[A#m] [C#]
[F#] [F] [D#m]
[D#] Now 4 times that riff is your intro, so the second
[A] line from bar 5 plays the [C#] same riff again twice, [F#]
[D#m] [C#] [D#m]
but when you get to the final bar of
it and you've played that 3 note phrase, 4th string, 3rd string, 2nd string twice, you're
going to lead into the verse which begins on a G [B] chord by getting the 6th string at
the 2nd fret.
You could play it with your index finger, I like to hook the thumb over
[F] and play 6 at the 2nd fret, and 3 [F#m] open because you'll now be moving chord shape into the
G chord that's [B] coming next.
So that [G] final bar of the [D#m] riff is 1, and 2, and 3, [F#m] and 4,
[D#m] [F] and [C#] 6th string [F#] open, or open 3rd string, fingers away as you're moving into the G chord.
