It Is Well | The Tragic Story Behind the Amazing Hymn | Horatio Spafford chords
Start Jamming...
[Em] The scriptures [G] teach that as Christians we've been crucified with Christ and therefore [Em] our
lives are not our own.
In fact, we [D] live this life by faith.
[G]
Sometimes that faith is severely tested.
[Em] There's a hymn called, [G] It is Well with My Soul.
It was written by a man named Horatio Spafford.
He was a wealthy lawyer from Chicago and in 1870 he lost his only son to scarlet fever.
[Em] A year later the great Chicago fire broke out [D] and wiped out nearly all of [G] his real estate assets.
[Cm] Then a couple of [Em] years later the economy took a dive and [G] he was even more affected financially.
In order to [C] help boost the family [Em] spirits he sent his wife and four [Bm] daughters overseas
[G] to attend a rally by D [C].L. Moody.
At the [Em] last minute he wasn't able to go because of [D] some business concerns and [G] so he sent them
and he said, I'll meet up with you shortly.
[C] Well, halfway across the [Em] Atlantic Ocean their [Am] boat was struck by another vessel and it [G] sunk
[C] to the bottom of the ocean.
[Em] When Horatio Spafford's [Am] wife Anna got to a place where she could telegram [C] him about the
incident [G] her message only had two words, [Am] saved alone.
[G]
His [C] four daughters [G] drowned in the [Am] accident.
He was obviously devastated and as he boarded a [G] ship to sail across the ocean to meet up
[Cm] with his grieving wife he spent many hours on [Em] the bow of that ship looking over the [D] edge
at the waters that had [C] claimed the life of his four precious daughters.
And when he got to about [G] the spot where they perished he penned these [C] words,
When peace like a river attendeth my [Em] way,
When [D]
sorrows like sea billows roll,
[C] Whatever my lot thou hast [G] taught me to say,
It is well, it is [C] well with my soul.
That's really the same message that Peter gives us in 1 Peter 4, verse 19.
He reminds us that sometimes we're going to suffer [G] according to the will of God.
But when we [C] do, we're supposed to entrust our souls to a faithful creator.
If our faith is strong enough to do that we'll be able to say like Horatio Spafford did,
Whatever my lot thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, [G] it is well with my [C] soul.
When peace like a river
[F]
[C] Attendeth my way,
[G] [Am] When sorrows [D] like sea billows [G] roll,
Whatever [F] my lot [C] thou [D] hast taught me to [G]
say,
It is [C] well, it [F] is well [G] with [C]
my soul.
And it is well [G]
with my soul.
[C]
And it [F] is well, it [G] is well [C] with my soul.
And my sin, O the bliss of this [F] [G] glorious
[C] thought,
[G] My [Am] sin not [D] in part, but [G] the whole,
[C] Was nailed to the cross, and I [D] bear [G] no more.
Praise [C] the Lord, praise [F] the [G] Lord, O [C] my soul.
It is well with [G]
my soul.
[C]
Yes, it [F] is well, it [G] is well, [C] my soul.
[Am] [C]
It is well, it is well.
And Lord, haste the [F] day [C] when the faith [G] shall [C] be sight,
[G] And [Am] the clouds be rolled [D]
back as [G] a scroll,
And [C] the trump shall [F]
resound,
And [D] the Lord shall [G]
descend,
And even [C]
so, it is [F]
well, [G] [C] my soul.
It is well, it is [G] well with my soul.
With my [C]
soul.
And it [F] is well, it is [C]
[G] well with my [C] soul.
