Little Bones by the Tragically Hip.
Here's a quick run-through.
[F#] _
_ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [F#] _
_ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] Okay, so let's get into [G] the lesson more deeply.
[G#] Here's a fifth string [F#m] A if you want to tune to me.
[A] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ Now the [Gm] song is basically an E [C#] and then an F-sharp minor.
[E] Those are the two main chords in the song.
_ _ You're playing mainly _ _ top strings.
The [G] F-sharp minor,
sometimes you can play all the strings if you [F#] really want to get more of [F] a_
want the chord to sound fuller.
[F#m] _ _ _ _ For those [F#] of you that don't know, an F-sharp minor is just a normal F-sharp bar chord, [N] but you take this finger off.
So the fingering looks like that and you play all [E] these notes, _ _ barring them right there.
You just have these two fingers here on the fourth and fifth string.
_ And that's the pattern actually for the beginning part, which we'll do right now. _
[F#] _ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _
So you start off with the E and go quickly into the F-sharp.
[F#] _
_ _ _ And then holding that chord, [C#] _ you start playing these two [F#] strings alternately.
[C] So the fourth and the fifth [F#] string. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [N] And then you take off this finger first, which is going to give you_
I'm trying to keep this finger out of the way here.
That's going to give you this note _ right here.
[E] Second fret, basically, because you're barring this whole fret.
So it's going to give _ [F#] you_
_ which [C#m] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [Em] is the equivalent of doing [C#m] this. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ That's what I'll do [D] for this part of the lesson because it's a little bit easier [F#] to see what I'm doing.
So it's these two. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [E]
And then you're doing the same thing right here on the second fret, same two strings. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And then you're just going [B] to get this one, put it right there. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ Okay, let's run through that once.
_ [F#] _ _
_ _ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ [C#m] _
Alright, that's [N] that part.
_ _ _ The chords are the same for the _ verse [E] of the song.
[F#m] _ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _
_ But then it changes to an [Fm] A [B] and then a B, which is kind of the same [E] pattern.
You're going from an E down here [F#] to an F-sharp.
_ And then [Gm] you just switch it up to an A, [A] _ _
[E] which is the same pattern as an E.
You're playing the top few strings here, except you shift everything _ one string [A] higher.
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _ _
[E] _ _ [F#] Back [G#] to the other one.
Now there's a couple of little fills that he [F] does here that will help you sell the song if you're playing it.
Because that's the kind of stuff people hear.
And one of them [F#] is_
_ _ [F#m] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ And when you're doing the F [F#m]-sharp_ _
F [C#]-sharp minor, I should say.
_ _ Right afterwards, _ you play this note right here.
[F#] _ _
_ _ _ And then an open B string, which is the second [B] string.
And _ then you fret this note right here, which is the second fret of the third string.
[A] _
_ _ [F#m] And then back up to [B] the_ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [F#] _ _ _ _ _ _
Now [D#] that's a little bit strange because you're playing the_
You're barring all these notes here.
So you kind of have to change your fingering [E] because you need to take this finger off to play [B] that open B string.
[E] _ _ _ I [F#] can't really explain how to do it.
You just sort of do it.
It sounds more like this.
[F#m] _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
_ Okay?
[F#] And then [G#] on the second part of it, where you're starting on the A_
[B] _ _ _
[F#] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ [Em] And that one is here on the fifth string, second fret.
You're already [B]
kind of fingering that note anyway.
So just take that [E] note.
_ [F#] _
Slide it up two frets.
_ _ [C#] _ Then bar again here.
[E] And take this finger right here on the fifth fret, second string.
_ _ Then that note [D#] off. _
_ _ This note here.
And then you play the third string.
[B] _ _ _ _ So once again, that's_
_ [F#] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ [D#m] _
_ [B] _ _ _ You can let those notes kind of ring together.
_ [F#] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ _ Alright?
[C#] And then the chorus of the [F#] song is a D.
I think they don't use this note and they use [Em] the open E string instead.
And you sort of use a little bit of [F] a picking pattern there to let [F#] that E note ring in [F] once in a [D] while. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
Alright?
And [E] then an E. _ _ _ _ _
_ And there's one more little fill that [G] he does there.
Now you can take the chord off and just do the notes like [A] this.
_ [E] _ _
_ Which I think is more like what he actually does.
He may do it up here even.
_ _ _ [F] Same pattern but it's down here.
I'll show it to you down here.
It's on the fourth string.
[G] Kind of slide it up.
[E] _ _ Second fret. _ _
[A] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ [G#] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ Now for [N] those of you that made it this far into the lesson, I'll give you a quick little bonus.
It's blow it high doh.
Which is a little bit of the same pattern. _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] _ _ [E] _ _ [B] _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [B] Once again you're doing a basic B chord pattern.
But this time we're only using just those two strings.
And we're going to use just the fourth and the fifth string for [E] all of this.
And I'm going to peel that note off and on.
[F#] But I'm borrowing that [E] note here. _ _
So I'm starting with it off.
And I'm starting on the fifth string.
_ _ [E] _ _ [B] _ _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ [B] _ _ _ _
_ You play that a few times and then you go.
It's _ [A] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ [A] _ the same picking pattern on the same strings except you're doing an A.
Which is an open fifth and a second fret on the fourth string.
And you're going off and on on that. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
