Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Fortunate Son - The secret to play it like the record chords
Start Jamming...
Okay, so here's a couple of Creedence stuff
That always baffled me and people always play it wrong like when you go out on YouTube
all the how-to tutorials
They have the I guess the pitch correct.
I mean they have the correct tones I suppose
correct keys but
At least for these three songs
They're not in standard tuning so what they had what they did a lot at least on that first album maybe more
Is that John Fogerty would play?
His guitar tuned down a whole step.
So it's the same interval tuning that you do
It's just that you start on a low [D] D
[G] [C] [F] He plays in that tuning while his brother Tom Fogerty plays standard tuning
and
So the mix of those two things together the chords are shaped differently and you add them together and
That's the great sound you get on some of those records.
So here's the first one.
So Proud Mary
[E] You look on any
YouTube or someone saying you're playing Proud Mary and you immediately
immediately goes to tell you that it's in D and
No, it's not or I guess that's what the that's what Tom Fogerty is playing Tom Fogerty usually was playing a 12 string
[F] Rickenbacker or Gretsch 12 string and he was playing a D [G] chord with the D shape with the standard tuning
But what John Fogerty [F#] is playing is not he's playing it in the
Tuned down version which I have here and he's either playing a Les Paul on some songs or he's playing
A Rickenbacker.
I don't know the model exactly but it's like a it's sort of like the 325
Sort of like the John [D#] Lennon, but not exactly
[D#m] But [N]
he's playing it in tuned down so Proud Mary, all right, so we all learn primary going to see a It's not
Fogarty is playing is [C] this [A] [C] [A]
a
[C] [A] [G] [F]
[D]
[G] D
So that's a D.
I mean that's a D chord.
He's just playing it like it's an E, but it's still a D because
He's got it [D] tuned down a whole step
So [G]
[D] [A]
[Bm]
[A] [D] [G] all those little licks that he does gives it away.
You can tell he's not in D with all those little
[D] It's
[G] not you can't do that from a D [F#] easily and make it sound like that because you can tell
[Em] [D]
[A] [D] [C] [A]
[C] [A] [F]
[D] All right, so
So
[G] [A] [F#m]
[A] all
[Bm]
[B] those you can tell just because the strings are looser it's got that swampy sound to it
It's just [N] all sloshy and it's because he's got that tuned down.
So that's Proud Mary
That's the first one the next one that's a giveaway is Bad Moon Rising
Bad Moon Rising we learned it in D again.
It's not that [C] riff.
He's playing it from an E [D] position
[A] [D] So
[A] [G] [D] all [N] those you're giving it [D] away with those little rest of you
Riff so he's brothers playing a D chord
[A] [G] [D]
[G] [F#] [D]
[A] [G] [D]
[A] You
Riff
So [D]
[A] [G] [D]
[G] [D]
[A] [G]
[D]
[B] amaze your friends
[A]
[G] [N] Sounds just like the record because that's what he did and the last one is fortunate son
Fortunate son.
I think he plays out on the Rickenbacker maybe
But again, it's tuned down and the giveaway on that is
when he gets down here on the
A position, but it's a technically it's a G chord, I guess
But you know, you're the opens up with the bass and the drums
[F#]
Right [Gm]
on the G note
[G]
[F] [Em]
[F] [Gm] [G]
That you know, you're in that tuned down position because it you can hear that string rings out
[Dm] [Gm] The [G] hammer on that's the giveaway that you're on it.
So he goes on
[F] [C]
[G]
[D] [C]
[Am] [G]
[Gm] [C#m] [Am]
[G]
[C#]
[A] [G]
[B] You
So those are three there's probably more but those are the three that were giveaways for me I've got to get it down
I'll start spreading the gospel of the tuned down Joe John for VD
Maybe we'll see more on YouTube coming up, but just want to get that on the record.
All right.
Peace out
