[A#] I love the message behind this [E] tune.
As my good friend Mr.
Foster points out,
we should all pay attention to how much we can hurt others
with our words.
That song was really inspired by [Dm] a conversation with my daughter.
[D] She came home from school, she's 11 [G] years old, you know,
and she's in just a terrible state.
She was just [A] starting middle school in fifth [D] grade.
She came home and asked me what a word meant,
and I was kind of shocked [E] to hear it out of her [Bm] mouth.
I said, where did you hear that?
[G] She said, well, some of [E] the girls used it at school,
and I didn't [D] know what it meant, but it sounded bad to me.
[Em] And I said, well, you know, it's about a [A] woman's sexuality, hon,
and there's nothing good [Em] about it.
It's just to make somebody feel [B] small or feel bad.
It's not really something you should [F#m] use.
[Em] It just ate at [D] me, and I remember I put [Bm] the kids to bed,
and my wife went to sleep early,
and I [G]
poured [D] myself a bourbon on the [B] rocks,
and I walked out in that backyard and was [D#] just praying to God,
[D] and I just [A] cried like a baby.
[F#m] I just thought, [Gm] I don't want that in my house.
[A] And just the loss of innocence [D] for her.
So I was going to write the [F#m] next day with Alan [G] Shamblin,
and I called him up.
I said, man, I don't know what [F#m] you have in mind to write about,
but I hope you like [D] this [A] idea.
And he said, absolutely, I'll write [G] that with you.
And we just took it to the next level by talking about hate speech
and that there's nothing good about it.
I don't care who it's about.
[D] I don't want that in my house.
And I've [A] always considered that when I'm playing on stage,
that's my house for that night.
It might be somebody [G] else's house tomorrow night.
When I'm on stage, as long as I'm on stage, that's my house.
[A] So we kind of took that [D] point of view, too.
So [E] it's not in my house.
[D] I don't want that in my house.
[Am]
[F]
[Am]
[F]
[Am] I'm a son of the South who heard that word too [C] much.
Growing up, [Am] something down in my soul
knew that it was [F] a story you shouldn't touch.
All [G] that hate, all [Dm] that shame, all [Am] that anger, all that [F] pain,
[G] redneck racist, hip-hop [Dm] rapper, some kid using it just [D] for laughter.
Not in [A] my house, not from [F] my mouth.
I'm going [G] to sing for the souls that get kicked around.
[A] Words shouldn't be [F] a laughing just to cut [G] you down.
Not in [Am] my house.
[F]
[A] There's a guy on the street with a sign that says, God hate [F] fags.
And that's so wrong.
[A] It rushes my soul to see [Am] evil burn so [F] strong.
Stone [G]-damned sticks, politics.
[Dm] If the [A] devil holds your coat, why [F] are you getting your arrest?
[G] I don't think so [Dm] small, but [F] God so big.
[D] Not in my [A] house, [Am] not from my [F] mouth.
I'm going [G] to sing for the souls that get kicked around.
[Am] Words shouldn't be a [F] laughing just to cut [G] you down.
Not in [A] my house.
Not [Am] [F]
in my [A] house.
[Am]
[F]
Not on this day.
[G] [Am] Me and this six-string [G] machine are going to kill some [F] hate.
[C] Because you don't talk to my friends that [Cm] way.
You don't talk to my brothers [C] that way.
And you damn sure don't talk to [F] my daughter that way.
Not in [Am] my house, not from my [F] mouth.
Not on [G] my watch, not when I lay you down.
[A] Words aren't a weapon just to cut a woman [G] down.
Not in [A] my house, not from my mouth.
I'm [G] going to sing for the souls that get kicked around.
[A] Words shouldn't be a laughing just to cut [G] you down.
Not in [Am] my house.
