Welcome to your 5-minute uke lesson.
[E] My name is Cynthia Lin and my mantra is practice your ukulele 5 minutes a day.
It's good for your brain and it's good for your soul.
Today we're going to work on the picking pattern from Shallow.
I just posted a play along video [C] with my awesome class in San [Am] [G] Francisco and a lot of you have
asked about the picking pattern.

So today we're going to focus on that picking riff in Shallow that's really just so iconic.
It's a little bit challenging because of the timing.
So we'll work on that today.

So let's start right on that first [G] phrase that goes, _ tell [D] me something [G] _ _ girl.
So we'll start with the chords.
E minor is the first chord and [Em] we go, _ _ tell me, and then hit the D on [D] something, and then
[G] G is on girl.
_ _ _ Now the E minor, each of these chords actually has a different picking pattern within the riff.
So E minor, the picking pattern goes one, [Em] two, three, and four, two.
It's [C] the main picking pattern for the entire song and it's the same picking pattern that
we use for creep if you've done that tutorial with me.
If you haven't done finger picking with me before, I teach it a little differently.
I give each finger a number.
So thumb is one, index two, middle finger three, ring finger four, [G] and four fingers,
each finger gets a string.
So let's practice on that E minor.
I'll try to show you a little closer.
We go one, _ _ [Em] two, _ three and four at the same time, and then back to two.
Okay.
Let's play that a couple of times.
[G] And one, [Em] two, three and four, two.
Again, one, two, three and four, two.
So you're going to play one of [A] those on E minor.
Then on the D you go one, [D] and then two and three and four all at the same time.
_ Okay.
And then on the G you pluck all the strings at the [G] same time.
_ You can also strum if you like that better.
Yeah.
So let's put that together slowly.
E minor, we go one, [Em] two, three and four, two.
[D] To the D you go one, and then two, three, four.
_ And then [G] the G.
_ _ Okay.
So practice that a little bit, get that under your fingers.
You can rewind this video if you want, because now we're going to put the finger picking
numbers to the side and focus on the timing numbers.
Okay.
So the timing for the E minor goes one [Em] and two and.
It's nice [A] and even.
Then on the D it's still even.
We go three [D] and, and now we hold on the four [G] and then we hit the G on the and.
So that can be a little confusing and will take a [E] little bit of practice.
Okay.
Let's try to put it all together.
So on the E [G] minor, we go one [Em] and two and D, [A]
[D] three and [G] four and.
Great.
_ Okay.
We'll play it one more time.
In time.
I'll count nice and slow.
We'll go three and four and [Em] one and two and [D] three and [G] four and.
Yup.
You got to practice, [Eb] make sure that you hold on that four.
And then you'll see that I have, uh, after that phrase, [Bb] I write NC, which means no chord,
which means that you're going to hold a whole measure before you start on the next phrase.
Okay.
So let's try that in time with the hold.
Ready?
We'll go three and [Gm] four and [Em] one and _ D, [A] _
[D] three, [G] four and hold two, _ three, _ four.
Okay.
Let's sing it.
Ready?
One and two and three and four and.
[Em] _ _ Tell [D] me something _ [G] _ girl.
Hold [Gm] two, three, four.
And now let's go to the next phrase on the C.
You play the main picking pattern.
_ [C] _ _ Are you happy in this?
Yeah, you're playing it twice.
And then just single strums for modern world.
_ [G] Modern [D] _ world.
Okay.
[G] Let's play that whole first line all together.
I'll count it a little bit faster.
We'll go three and four and [Em] _ _ tell [A] me [D] something [G] _ girl.
Hold two, _ three to the C. _
[C] _ Are you happy in this [G] modern [D] _ world?
Okay.
Let's practice on the next line.
Same pattern.
[G] Ready?
_ [Em] _ Or [D] do you [G] need more? _
Hold two, [C] three to the C. _ _
Is there something else you're [G] searching [D] _ for?
[E] Okay.
Now the pre-chorus uses the same picking riff.
So let's try it on I'm falling.
Ready?
We go three and four and _ _ [Bm] I'm _
[G] falling.
_ Two, three, _ four.
[C] And all the good times.
Now picture the G.
[G] I find _ [D]
myself _ longing.
Now practice on that last line of the pre-chorus.
Same [Gm] pattern.
[Em] _ _ _ _ [Bm]
Four, [G] change.
_ Two, three, four.
_ [C] And in the bad times [G] I fear [D] myself. _ _ _
All [N] right.
So you'll use this picking pattern for the intro, the verse, the pre-chorus, and the
first time through the chorus.
And then the second time through the chorus, you kind of amp it up a bit with the rocks drum.
