[E] Hey [G] guys, it's Karl Brown for [Ab] Guitar Lessons 365.com.
Today we're learning how to play Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochran.
This [Eb] one's a quick one.
It's only really one main chord progression.
Three chords and you're good to go.
There is a little bass, really more of a bass guitar lick that I'm kind of adding to the guitar line
so we can make it sound like the record more.
Alright, so now let me just show you that lick real quick.
We're in standard tuning here.
You can play the [E] lick here.
This is [B] where the bass player is actually playing it.
So I put the 6th fret here [Eb] on the A string.
[E] Hammer 7.
I pick the 7th fret [Eb] twice.
[E]
So I did it here [Em]
on the [B] 1st and 2nd fret on the D string.
[E] And what I'm doing in the song is when you hear that, which is between the big [B]
[Abm] chords there,
I'm just basically playing an [E]
E power chord.
[B] Low E open string, [E] 2nd on the A, 2nd on the D.
And I'm just [Eb] hammering.
I'm starting here on the [E] 1st fret on the D
and hammering on to the 2nd fret on the D.
So we have this.
Really muting it there.
[G] And then we get to those chords.
Now let [Em] me show you those chords.
[A] [E]
[B] [E] So I start with an E.
E major chord to [A] an A.
[B] Then a B dominant 7th chord.
If you don't know what that is, that is the 2nd fret on the A,
1st fret on the D,
2nd fret on the G,
open B string,
and the 2nd fret on the high E string.
[E] Back to the E.
So I have this.
[Gb] [B]
[E] [Gb] Just repeating those [E]
simple chords there.
Now what am I doing with the rhythm here?
I'm starting, now I'm keeping this same 8th note, down up, down up, down up feel,
but I'm not hitting the strings all the time.
That's kind of how you keep the timing of it.
But when I actually do hit the strings, I start with an upstroke.
And then when you get [A] to that next chord,
[E] you hit it with a downstroke and kill the strings.
So we have this.
[Gb] And from there, then you're going to do the same thing starting on the [D] B7 chord,
up, down, [B] up, [E] over to the E.
[N] So meanwhile, while I'm doing this, I'm keeping the timing by keeping my hand moving.
So we have this.
[A] [E] [B]
[E] [A] [Gb]
[E] [A] [E] So let me just start here.
[B] [E]
[A] [D] Up, [E] down, up, down.
Alright, [Bb] now from there we go to [A] a kind of [E]
[Db] a bluesy little shuffle thing.
We're going to [A] have open A.
And then blues.
[E] Open A and then the [Am] 2nd fret on the D.
Hit that twice.
And then open A, [Gb] 2nd fret on the D, 4th fret on the D [A] string.
[E]
And then we just hit the [N] E real quick and then the low voice, little comic low voice comes in.
And then we're back to [A] this.
[Eb] Back to the E.
And then it starts over [E] with just that.
[B] [E]
[A] [E] [N] Alright, so that's pretty much it for this song.
You're going to hear that progression play a lot, but it's a good little rhythm work out there.
It makes you change those chords pretty quick as well, but there's no barre chords.
So it should be pretty easy for a beginner guitar player to attempt.
Alright, I hope you enjoyed it.
