One of my favorite introductions to a rock song is the intro to Sweet Jane by
The Velvet Underground from The Loaded Album.
[C#] It's very different from
the Rock and Roll Animal version which I think most people are more familiar with.
It has three guitars layered on top of one another and I'd like to show you
the three parts and see how they blend together.
So the first part is just the
chord progression.
[D] It's a D [A] to an A [G] to a G [Bm] to a B minor
[A] to an A.
[N] So I'll play
through that once.
I'll play it slowly.
One, two, three, four.
[D] [A] [G]
[B] [A] [D] [A] [G]
[B] [A] [D] [A] [G] [Bm]
[A] [D] [A] [G] [Bm]
[A] [D] [A#]
Okay so the second part
is mostly playing around in the seventh position here and I'll play it along
with the with a track I just recorded of the chords and then I'll explain to you
what I'm doing.
[D] [A] [G]
[B] [A] [D] [A]
[G] [A] [D] [A] [G]
[A] [D] [A] [G]
[B] [A] [D]
Okay so I'm going to show you this part really quickly.
He's in the
seventh [N] position sliding up on the fifth string to the [A] ninth fret.
[B] Okay he moves
to the fourth string.
[C#m]
[B] [C#m] [B] [A]
[B] [E] [F#]
[G] Okay he's climbing up seven nine to [E] ten on the fifth [G] string.
[F#]
[Em] [F#m] [B] [E]
[F#] [A] [B] [A]
[G] [F#] [A] [G] [F#] [D#] Okay that's seven on the fourth string to tenth on the fifth string to the
[A] ninth on the fifth string.
[G]
[F#] Okay so the third part is played way up in
[B]
[E] the 17th position and I'm going to play that over the tracks I've just
recorded and see if we can make it sound a little bit like the studio.
Here we go.
[D]
[F#m] [G] [E] [D]
[E] [G] [E] [F#m]
[D] [Em] [A]
[G] [B] [D]
Okay so you're starting out here.
I think it's a harmonic at the 19th fret of [A] the
second string.
Okay climbing down 21 to 19 to 17 on the first string.
[B]
[E] [Em] [Am] Okay so [D#] [N] now
you go to the 17th fret of the second string.
Now you go to the third string
climbing up 16 to [B] 19.
[Em] [A] [E] Okay [Em] [B] climbing [E]
[D#] [Em]
[A] down again.
[D#] [E] [Em]
Okay climbing up then from the
16th fret of the third string.
[B] [A] [B]
[Em] Okay [E] 21 to 19.
[F#]
[Em]
[B] Okay.
[E] [B]
