[N] Hey this is [Em] John with LearningGuitarNow [Eb].com.
This is podcast number 44 and in [E] today's podcast I'm going to [D] show you a lick in the style
of Dwayne [G] Allman played over Stormy Monday.
[E] This lick is similar [Eb] to what Dwayne Allman [F] did on the Fillmore East album when he played
[Eb] Stormy Monday, the [G] live album.
So I've played the lick [Bm] for you and it starts [F] right at the [Ebm] start of the 12 [B] bar blues.
[Cm] This tune is in the key of G.
I'm hitting [A] two notes, the 8th [F] fret, which is the [Eb] root note of G at [Em] the beginning of
the lick, [Eb] right here on the B [G] string.
Now I'm going [Eb] to bend up the 10th [Gbm] fret here on the high E [E] string.
The next note is the 7th fret on the high E string, back to the 10th fret.
[D] It's [G] a pretty unique pattern.
Dwayne Allman, I haven't really [E] heard a whole lot of people use that specific [C] pattern, but
Dwayne [E] Allman used it specifically.
It's [Ab] right in there, that B.B.
King position, [C]
but he added the [E] 7th fret to it, the major 3rd, in the key of G.
So you have, [Abm] it just gives it a really cool major type sound [Dbm] when the band kicks in.
So you're bending the 10th fret [Em] up, 7th fret on the high E string, [G] 10th fret on the high E string.
Now you're going to bend 10th fret on the high E string up [Em] to the sound [G] of the 12th
fret, [E] and then pull it [Gbm] down and hit the 10th fret [D] on the E string.
[G]
Then bend it again, [Em]
do the same thing, pull it down.
[D]
So the very first part of the lick is this.
[Em]
[D]
Next part of it, we're going to pre-bend on [E] the B string on the 10th fret up, [N] and [C] then
hit it, and pull it [G] down, and pull [Eb] off to the 8th fret, [E] the root note G, [Eb] on the [C] B string.
[G] [Gb] It's a really fast move.
[C]
Pre-bend [F] before you hit it with the pick,
[G] pull it down [E] and pull off at the [B] same time.
[G] Now hit 8th to 10th on the B string, hammer on [F] 8th to 10th on the [Db] D string.
[C]
[Db] And [F] what's cool about this [Gb] is the 10th fret on the D string is the [Gm] C note, and [Eb] it just
so happens that this lick occurs over the C chord, [F] so it makes sense.
[E]
He's [Ebm] hitting [Eb] the C note over the C chord, pretty basic.
[Em] [G]
[F] [G] Also, I'm putting [Ebm] a [E] vibrato after I pull it down, [G]
[Ebm] the second time I [B] hit it.
[G] Now hit it again, apply [D] vibrato.
[G] [C] That [G] B.B. King up [F] vibrato style.
[Em]
[G] [F]
Now the next part of the lick, we're going to [A] the 9th fret, sliding into it, on the G
string, [E]
[G] 8th, 10th on the B string, [Em] 9th, 8th.
[G]
[Gbm] You can look at this [E] as the C little chord [C] here, notes directly from the C [A] chord.
[G]
That's kind of how I like to look at it.
Or you could look at it as [Eb] part of the B.B. King lick in the key of G.
[G] But [Eb] that's why it's [A] being played over C chord, [Eb] so I like to look at it as [C] this little triad
[Dbm] here, root, [E]
3rd, 5th, [C]
and then [B] adding the 6th here.
[C]
But that's the [Em] lick.
[G]
And then we're going back to the bending, the 10th fret on the high E string, [E] [Gb]
7th fret
on the [Em] high E string, bend it up again.
[Gm]
Now [Gb] this is a very unique [B] bending style that he used.
I [D] hear him do this a lot [Dm] on the Fillmore East Stormy [Eb] Monday solo.
You bend up to the 12th fret [Gb] of the high E string, and then right after [Dm] that, you bend
up to [Eb] the 13th fret of the high E string.
That's giving you a major 6th and then a flat [D]
7th sound.
So you have this.
[A]
[Em]
[B] It's a really cool bending thing, it's kind of hard to pull off, but you've got to bend
to the 12th fret, and then bend to the 13th fret.
I think it's four times in a [Bm] row, but we're going to play it like this.
[E]
One time, [Em] another time, another time, [B] three times, then bend it up to the 12th fret again,
[Em] [Db] and then 10th fret on the E [G] string.
Now bend [B] 10th fret, [F] same thing again, [Dbm] just repeat that bend.
[G]
[Eb] And we're going to repeat the same [Db] little pre-bend [Eb] pull-off on the next lick, [G]
8, 9,
[C] and then [D] hammer on to [C] end the lick, 8 to 10, [A] over the C [B] chord.
So let's play the whole [F] lick very slowly.
[N] [G] [Em]
[G]
[Em] [E] [G]
[Am]
[Em] [A]
[Em] [D]
[E]
[Em]
[G]
[D] [Eb]
[E] And that's how this lick goes, it's in the style of Dwayne [Eb] Allman.
Again, check out Stormy Monday on Fillmore [D] East if you're not exactly familiar with it,
you'll [Db] hear a lot of these type things being played.
But that's a little bit about the Dwayne Allman style, just a really cool [F] lick, 12 bar [Ebm] blues,
this is over a [D] Stormy Monday [Eb] style track.

[G] Now hit it again, apply [D] vibrato.
[G] [C] That [G] B.B. King up [F] vibrato style.
[Em]
[G] [F]
Now the next part of the lick, we're going to [A] the 9th fret, sliding into it, on the G

[G] 8th, 10th on the B string, [Em] 9th, 8th.

So I've played the lick [Bm] for you and it starts [F] right at the [Ebm] start of the 12 [B] bar blues.
[Cm] This tune is in the key of G.
_ _ _ I'm hitting [A] two notes, the 8th [F] fret, which is the [Eb] root note of G at [Em] the beginning of

_ _ _ Now I'm going [Eb] to bend up the 10th [Gbm] fret here on the high E [E] string. _ _ _ _
The next note is the 7th fret on the high E string, _ _ _ back to the 10th fret.
[D] _ It's [G] a pretty unique pattern. _ _
Dwayne Allman, I haven't really [E] heard a whole lot of people use that specific [C] pattern, but
Dwayne [E] Allman used it specifically.
It's [Ab] right in there, that B.B.
King _ position, _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
but he added the [E] 7th fret to it, the major 3rd, in the key of G.
So you have, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Abm] it just gives it a really cool major type sound [Dbm] when the band kicks in.
So you're bending the 10th fret [Em] up, _ _ _ 7th fret on the high E string, _ _ [G] 10th fret on the high E string.
_ Now you're going to bend 10th fret on the high E string up [Em] _ to the sound [G] of the 12th
fret, [E] _ _ _ _ and then pull it [Gbm] down and hit the 10th fret [D] on the E string.
_ [G] _
_ Then bend it again, [Em] _
do the same thing, pull it down.
[D] _ _ _
_ So the very first part of the lick is this. _
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ Next part of it, we're going to pre-bend on [E] the B string on the 10th fret up, [N] _ _ _ _ and [C] then
hit it, and pull it [G] down, _ _ and pull [Eb] off to the 8th fret, [E] the root note G, [Eb] on the [C] B string.
_ [G] _ [Gb] It's a really fast move.
_ [C]
Pre-bend [F] before you hit it with the pick, _
[G] _ pull it down [E] and pull off at the [B] same time.
[G] _ _ _ _ _ Now hit 8th to 10th on the B string, _ _ hammer on [F] 8th to 10th on the [Db] D string.
[C] _ _
_ _ _ _ [Db] _ _ And [F] what's cool about this [Gb] is the 10th fret on the D string is the [Gm] C note, and [Eb] it just
so happens that this lick occurs over the C chord, [F] so it makes sense.
[E]
He's _ [Ebm] hitting [Eb] the C note over the C chord, pretty basic.
_ [Em] _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ [F] _ _ [G] Also, I'm putting [Ebm] a [E] vibrato after I pull it down, _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] the second time I [B] hit it.
[G] _ _ _ Now hit it again, apply [D] _ vibrato.
[G] _ _ [C] That [G] B.B. King up [F] vibrato style.
_ [Em] _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _
_ _ Now the next part of the lick, we're going to [A] the 9th fret, _ _ sliding into it, on the G
string, [E] _ _ _ _
[G] 8th, _ _ _ 10th on the B string, [Em] 9th, 8th.
_ [G] _ _ _
[Gbm] You can look at this [E] as the C little chord [C] here, _ _ _ notes directly from the _ C [A] chord.
_ _ [G] _ _ _ _ _
_ That's kind of how I like to look at it.
Or you could look at it as [Eb] part of the B.B. King lick in the key of G.
_ _ _ [G] _ But [Eb] that's why it's [A] being played over C chord, [Eb] so I like to look at it as [C] this little triad
[Dbm] here, root, [E]
3rd, 5th, _ [C] _ _ _ _ _
and then [B] adding the 6th here.
[C] _ _
But that's the [Em] lick.
_ _ [G] _ _
_ And then we're going back to the bending, the 10th fret on the high E string, [E] _ _ [Gb] _
7th fret
on the [Em] high E string, _ _ _ bend it up again.
_ [Gm] _ _
Now [Gb] this is a very unique [B] bending style that he used.
I [D] hear him do this a lot [Dm] on the Fillmore East Stormy [Eb] Monday solo.
You bend up to the 12th fret [Gb] of the high E string, and then right after [Dm] that, you bend
up to [Eb] the 13th fret of the high E string.
That's giving you a major 6th and then a flat [D]
7th sound.
So you have this.
_ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [B] It's a really cool bending thing, it's kind of hard to pull off, but you've got to bend
to the 12th fret, and then bend to the 13th fret.
_ I think it's four times in a [Bm] row, but we're going to play it like this.
[E]
One time, [Em] _ _ another time, _ another time, _ _ _ [B] three times, then bend it up to the 12th fret again,
_ _ [Em] _ [Db] and then 10th fret on the E [G] string.
_ _ _ _ _ Now bend [B] 10th fret, [F] same thing again, [Dbm] just repeat that bend.
_ [G] _
_ _ _ [Eb] And we're going to repeat the same [Db] little pre-bend [Eb] pull-off on the next lick, [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ 8, 9,
_ [C] and then [D] hammer on to [C] end the lick, 8 to 10, [A] _ over the C [B] chord.
_ So let's play the whole [F] lick very slowly.
[N] _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ [Em] _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Am] _ _
_ _ [Em] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
[Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [Em] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [D] _ _ _ [Eb] _
_ [E] And that's how this lick goes, it's in the style of Dwayne [Eb] Allman.
