[Ab] Hey everybody, this is John [F] with LearningGuitarNow [C].com.
In this little [F] video lesson, I'm going to talk to you about how [Fm] to get [Eb] Dwayne Allman's guitar [Gbm] tone.
And this [E] is a simple little tip.
[Eb] This is not [C] a [E] technical discussion [Eb] or video [E] about pots, [Eb] capacitors, amps, and [E] [Db] speakers and [B] whatnot.
I'll leave [D] that for a different video.
But this is a very simple tip that'll cost you [Eb] less than a dollar to [Bm] start implementing
or [F] maybe right now you already have [A] it.
So what is [Abm] this tip I'm talking about?
It's all about using the pick.
[Eb] I [G] find a lot of people are [D] using the pointed part of the pick.
[E] That's a great thing to do, [D] but it gives you [G] a [Eb] really [D] precise sound [Bm] like this.
[Eb] [B]
[D] Just a [B] lot of attack.
I find Dwayne Allman's [Gb] tone doesn't [C] sound like that.
It's real [D] round, [G] real warm.
[Ab] It's not [Gb] piercing.
I tried using [Eb] the round side of the pick.
In [Gb] particular, this Dunlop Jazz 3, which [Ebm] has [Gbm] the round side is pretty thick.
[E] [F] Using that and also not hitting the [Gb] string directly on.
[D] Just like this, but [Ab] you're going to hit it at an angle [F] on that round side tip there.
You get more of this tone.
[Gbm]
[D] [A] So
[D]
[A] [D] [Em]
[Dm]
[Db] [D] [E] [Bm] [D]
[A] [C] [G] [F]
[A] [Gb] as you can tell, it's just a more round, smooth [C] tone.
[E] Once again, the pointed pick, [A]
[D] [G]
[D] [Eb] now it's a round side.
[Am]
[D] You just got to remember to angle [Ab] it.
If you [F] don't angle it, [Gbm] it won't be that much of a difference.
[G] It still will be a difference, but not [Gb] a huge.
I find that straight [Bm] on
[Am] [E] sounds like [Eb] that, but [Em] just angle it [B] a bit and [C] [Bm] [D]
[Eb] you just get a
totally different type of [D] attack.
I definitely hear that.
I [Gb] don't know if Dwayne Allman used [E] the round side of a pick or not.
I really don't know.
But [Ebm] I tried it [G] and it sounded more like him to me.
So this is what I'm using to sound like him.
Also using the [F] bridge pickup here on this Les Paul, I got the tone turned down to probably about [A] eight.
[Eb] I got the volume on about eight.
Using [E] a Maxon [Eb] OD808 through a 66 Vibra-Luxe, but you don't [F] have to have all [B] this equipment.
[C] [Ab] Pretty much the goal [G]
or what you want to [E] take away from this is that [Ab] any tube [F] amp can work.
[E] Any [Ebm]
[Gb] guitar preferably with [D] humbuckers can work.
[G]
I [Db] find a lot of [Gb] Dwayne Allman's tone comes out of his hands and [Fm] there are elements that
you [Eb] can use in your guitar, your amp, and your pedals and playing and whatnot, but [C] it's
a lot about playing technique.
[F]
[Gbm] So angling that pick and [Gb] using the [D] round side of it, and in particular this [Ebm] pick has a thick
round side, [Gb] gets that [D] sound.
[Bm] [Gm]
[Bm] [G]
[B] [D]
[A] [D]
[A]
[D]
[B]
[C] [Em]
[A] [Am]
[D]
[Gb] [C] [F]
[D] [Fm] So you just want to mess [Eb] around with it.
[Ab] [G] Start using the round side of a pick.
[Gb] Once again, Dunlop [F] Jazz 3's [Gb] and [Ab] see if you can [E] hear a [Eb] difference in [G] using the pointed side.
I definitely can hear a huge difference.
[Am] [C]
[Dm] [A] [D] [Am] [D]
[A] [G] [Eb] Just [G] a rounder tone.
So
