Hello there, this is a short lesson to help you to start with fingerpicking blues ukulele.
I'm going to play you a simple 12 bar blues with just three chords and I tapped it out.
You can find the tablature for free at my website.
You can find the link in the video description.
_ _ And first I'll show you the chords.
It's in the key [A] of A.
_ Second fret, first fret open and open
and use these two fingers to take [F] the chords.
Then we're going to D.
Just [F#] add to the third
finger of the second string and [Am] remove the rest.
So we have second fret _ _ _ [Am] and open and finally we
use E [G#] chord.
[D] First fret, second fret, [E] open and second fret. _ _
[F#] Okay now fingerpicking what is it
all about?
Your thumb will play [G#] a sort of a bass line.
You could compare that with the left hand
of a piano and one or [A] two fingers will pick melody notes.
So I'm [G] going to play what's in the tab
exactly how I tapped it out and afterwards I'll talk to you about how to improvise using the
elements that you will see in the tablature.
So you have well a prep you can practice in an
[G#] enjoyable way and rewarding way.
There we go. _
_ [F#m] _ _ [A] _ [C#m] _ _ _ _
[A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ [F] _ [F#] _ _ _ _
[F] _ _ [Am] _ _ _ [C#m] _ _ _
[F#m] _ _ _ [A] _ _ [E] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ Notice that I'm playing that softly.
It doesn't
have to be hard, just softly.
So you know it's there [D] but not overpowering.
Okay now what did we do? _
I'll show you what you can do with [A] the A chord for example. _
So _ an improvisation would mean you
simply keep on going with the tab and you can use all [C] notes in the A chord.
For example _ third string
[C#] open and [G] first fret.
That hammer [C#] on we've seen.
The second string you can use all notes open,
second and [G] third fret and the first string [B] also open, second [Am] and third.
So let's play a little while.
[A] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ [A] _ _ [C#m] _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] Then you go to A [Am] and here we can play [C] the third string [D] open and the second fret.
The [E] first string
open [Fm] _ [F#] first and second fret [B] and the first string open second [D] and third fret.
_ [A] _ _ _ _ Just dumping away slowly.
One to the beat.
[F] _ _ [A] _
_ _ [F#] _ _ [A] _ _ _ _
[Am] _ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ _
[F#] _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ [C] _ _ _
[A] _ And _ [G#] in the [E] E chord we can [C#m] play _ open second string,
[F#m] second [Gm] fret and third fret [A] and the same for the _ _ first string open second and third.
_ You'll find also these notes in the tablature.
So let's do a little bit [E] in E. _ _ _ _
_ [G] _ _ _ _ [A] _ _ _
_ [F#] Now your blues, the 12 bar blues, has four bars in A, two bars in D, _ back two bars in A, then two bars in E
and finally two bars in A once more.
And in the tablature bar 11 is that [C#] turnaround.
[D#] You _ [A]
can simply replace that with staying in E.
For example I'll play bar nine.
[E] _ _ Sorry I meant A before.
So bar nine is E _ like in the tab _ [A] and instead of _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _
[C#] that turnaround [A] _ you [F#] can play this also fast of [A] course.
_ _ [F#m] _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ [Am] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ [N] Try slowly and _ at a steady rhythm.
You can also try to play accompanied by a metronome that will
[A] help you to keep the beat.
Okay I'm just going to play a bit more in this kind of material and
hope you have fun with it.
