[Bb] Oh, you're here.
Hey, how's it going?
Oh, I'm Colin Daniel.
I'm from RiffNinja.com.
Who are you?
Oh, you want to learn how to play Green River?
Well, here's the intro
to Green River.
How's that for a start?
It's a good riff.
You have to know a little
bit about scales and have played a little bit of guitar to get this.
It's definitely
not for a beginner.
I've added a few of my own embellishments to it too.
Over the years
of playing, I've tried to make up for the fact that a lot of times if I was playing
in a three-piece, I wanted to sound fatter.
I'll give you [A] the basics of the riff.
The
basics of the riff comes out of the E pentatonic minor scale.
[B] A little bit of an extension
there.
[E] Kind of a combination of these two positions.
It starts with this minor third
slide.
I use my third [Eb] and second fingers for that slide.
The reason why I do is because
[Bb] it's so [E] that I can make a smooth change over to the notes below it that I need.
It's
a double stop, meaning a double note riff for the start.
I hit the E [Bm] bass note.
[E] That's
the first thing I do.
Then [A] I choke it.
I do this slide up using my third and my second
finger.
I slide up two frets.
With my third finger, I'll start.
[Bm] Then as I'm sliding
up, I'll add my second finger.
By the time you get to the fourth and third fret on the
second and third string, this is fourth fret, third string.
This is third fret, second string.
I play them [E] together.
[Bm]
[A]
That's my next note.
[G] [Bm] Part of the scale.
[A]
[G] [E]
[B] You've got to practice
that first.
[Bm]
[E] [D]
[E]
I hammer that.
Sometimes I pick it too.
It depends on the feel you want for
this.
Again, I'll go over this part.
It's the bass note.
Then you choke it.
[C] Then you
do your slide up.
You've got to do it again.
They're all down picks there.
[Am] [Bm]
[G]
[Bm] [A] [E]
[Bm] [A]
[G] [E] Got that?
[Bb] [Bm] [Em] It
[Gb] ends on that open A.
Then it pushes off the fourth string, open, and goes to the [E] E.
[D]
[E] I
usually hammer that like this.
[A] [Bm]
Hammer [B] and ring.
It sounds so fast, right?
[Bm] [E]
[D] [E] [Bm] It's just
a repeat [Bb] cycle there.
[E] [D] [E]
[Bm] First, open fourth string.
[E] Then twice on the second fret, which is an
E.
Then pick the open fifth, [B] hammer the second fret, and [D] then underneath [A] it, pick the fourth
[Bm] string.
[D] That's quite a common move.
[A] Down, hammer, [A] up.
Down, hammer, up.
[E] You kind of
let the notes swing [A] together.
[E]
[Bm] [E]
[D] [B]
That's my little touch that I added [E] at the end.
I'll play the
full chord here.
I'll play the E a lot of times.
[Bm]
[D]
[E] You can play it like this.
[Bm]
[E]
[D] [A] [Bm]
[E] [Bm]
[E] [D] [E]
[Bm] [E] Cool riff.
A really cool riff.
I consider that a staple.
E pentatonic minor, boys and girls.
If [A] you
don't know that scale, you better get on it.
[Bm] All right.
Good luck.
