How To Play David Crosby Wooden Ships (Intro Only) chords
Start Jamming...
Wooden ships is in standard tuning, but being [B] David Crosby, he uses standard tuning [C] as if it's another open tuning [Eb]
and just moves chord shapes around the neck.
So, I'm using the song sheet to follow along with this, and I suggest you do the same, but we won't worry too much about the chord names.
You can see at the end of your song sheet that each chord is written out as [F] per its fingering, and that's really how we want to think of it, just in terms of shapes moving around.
The intro starts with these three [Em] chords,
[Am]
[A] [Eb] and that sequence repeats [F] four times for the intro.
Now, we have an E minor 7 chord, but not like you've ever played it before.
It's the 5th string at the 10th [G] fret, and the 4th and 3rd strings at the 12th [F] fret.
The E note, of course, is the bass.
And the strumming varies really throughout this song, but a typical pattern for the intro and verse is something like
[Em] 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
Where what you're actually hitting is [Eb] like
When I say bass, I mean the bass end of the chord, not specifically the [Em] bass note.
Bass, bass, down, down, up, bass up, down, down, up, down, up.
That's on that E minor 7 chord.
And [F] then the next two chords, A minor 9 to F6 over A, but it's the shapes [E] that move.
This [Eb] E minor 7 [D] shape moves so that it's now on [F] the 4th, 3rd and 2nd strings, but in exactly the same positions, 10th and 12th frets.
[Am]
And here we're going down, down, [Eb] up, and stop it with the fleshy part of your right hand.
The next chord is going to be a half bar, four strings at the 10th fret, that's your [E] F6 type [F] chord.
[Eb] Which will be down, so you get [Am] this
Down, down, [F] up, down
Let that ring across the rest of the bar, except for 4E, [C] where you're going to hit that chord again at the top of the chord,
and followed by the 12th fret, the 1st string [F] 12th fret.
[Eb] So [Am] it's the 10th fret half bar, [E] add the 1st string 12th fret, [Ab] down, up.
[Eb] In total, you get this for that [B] bar.
[Am]
[F] [Eb] Sometimes that pause after [F] that hit of the half bar, he'll fill in with some strums, not always, but sometimes like [Am] this.
[F]
[Eb] Feel free to vary the strum pattern, but that gets it done, more or less, and here it is again, we'll go around that sequence twice.
[E] [Em]
[Am] [E] [Em]
[F]
