Okay, Robin question number three this question comes from true fire student Zolt Dubrovic
Sorry if I pronounce that wrong
The question is this do you practice routinely nowadays?
What practice routine do you recommend for younger and less experienced blues players?
Well, I was never a great practicer.
I always played I've always had a band and
played constantly always had the guitar in my hands and
You know that kind of an approach
May be a slower way to develop your technique than if you actually sat down and really worked on it
But I
Did go through a period of back-and-forth picking technique and that was I would say for about six months where I
Literally practiced it back and forth picking technique and also practicing
Basic scales major minor melodic minor
whole tone diminished
With back-and-forth picking technique again for me the inspiration was the jazz guitar players that I loved
You know Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass
Wes obviously played with the thumb.
That's kind of different, but
I always thought of the beboppers as playing back and forth, you know, so
I did do that for a period of time and
To this day
whenever I
Sit down to warm up.
I do back and forth picking technique.
I play scales.
I play them slowly
That's that's the thing that I do just to kind of get warmed up
the one element about
Practice and playing, you know
Basically you play what you practice if you're practicing scales if you're practicing, you know riffs
You're gonna play scales and riffs
So it's one of the things that's kind of kept me a little shy of practicing too many techniques
Because then you wind up playing the techniques
So it's a it's a it's a really brilliant musician
I think who finds a way, you know to develop his technique to just a tremendous level and
Still be free from his technique and that's always a danger.
You know, I just chose not to go that way
Instead I played and played and played and played and I've always been interested in developing myself that way
You know, so some people who don't take necessarily the practice your technique way
You know, well, they sound the same their entire life.
They never go past a certain, you know level of
Ability is one thing but just you know having something more and different to say, you know
So for me, it's always been it's kind of this holistic approach of developing the musician I'm developing the musician
I'm becoming a better musician not necessarily a better guitar player, you know and
It's kind of a hard road in a way, you know, it's asking a lot of yourself to do that
But it's also asking a lot of yourself to put in 10 11 hour days
Practicing the guitar and practicing scales and you know patterns and things like that
I mean I admire that guy, you know
But you know, what does he sound like when he goes out on the bandstand, you know, and you know for me
I've always stayed close to the blues, which is not a highly technical, you know
form of music per se and
Just tried to develop myself through songwriting and you know playing in a melodic way playing in a soulful way
You know, that's kind of what I always drove for
You know if BB King can be you know
Obviously at least one of the most influential guitar players in the world, you know
I mean there's a big lesson in that but also there's a lot more music to be played as
Exemplified by somebody like Pat Metheny, you know, or you know many of the guitarists who are more contemporary my contemporaries
You know Pat Metheny can play rings around me, you know in a certain setting
But you know in my setting, you know, he may not be able to play that way, you know
So people have different strengths different leanings
But the most important thing in my opinion is that?
However, it is that you develop yourself that you're developing yourself in a musical way with the intention of playing music
as opposed to you know, the intention of an
