Waiting In Vain - Ukulele Tutorial - How To Play Easy Bob Marley Songs on Ukulele - Reggae Ukulele chords
Start Jamming...
Alright everybody, we're doing another Bob Marley one today, Waiting in Vain.
This is a great song.
It's called Waiting in Vain, but the lyrics are waiting in vain.
Yeah, well, that's just a little side note, okay?
This is a really cool jam, and if it wasn't for the bridge in it, it would be a two chord song, alright?
So if you're new to barre chords, this is a really good place to [C] start because there are only two of them,
but they're major seven chords, so they're a little exotic, so maybe they're new shapes even for our barre chord veterans.
But it's just a two [F] chord song.
Principally, [B] that's it.
They have a little break when there's a couple other chords,
[C] but the [Em] majority of the jam is a two chord, so we're not going to do the play along.
This is [A] like maybe the seventh Bob Marley song we've done,
so what I'm going to go ahead and do too as well is put a description in the link below.
I'm going to put a playlist to [E] all the Bob Marley songs that we've [B] done if you want to play
your ukulele and get [C] a whole Bob collection, okay?
But if you came for just this lesson, that's cool too.
I respect [E] that.
10thumbspro.com, new songs every Wednesday and Saturday, so you don't have to wait in vain.
[Ab] But right now, I want you to grab your ukulele [Em] brain and attention span, [C] and let's go ahead and break this lesson down.
All right.
Waiting in vain, Bob Marley.
Really happy to bring you this one.
All right.
I know that Bob Marley.
You know what's cool about Bob Marley?
[A] He's like a universally popular dude.
I know not everybody loves Bob Marley, but he's one of [Bb] those people you can bust this [Cm] one out at a party,
and [C] people would be pretty happy with it, okay?
So,
if it wasn't for the bridge, it would be a two chord [Bb] song.
So we're going to break down the bulk of the song with [Ab] the two chords, and it's an A flat major seven.
[F] And a [C] D flat major [Db] seven.
These two [Bb] chords, I don't know the exact percentage, [Eb] but rough estimate, 85% of the song.
[Bbm] So if we go to our A [C] flat major seven, our strum pattern is going to go
down up on a mute, [Ab] and then you play the chord.
So it looks like this.
[C] And you count it, [Cm] one and a two and a three and a four and a
because with reggae,
[N] you want the
the accents to happen on the ands.
So if you listen to the song, and the song's like boom boom,
you want it to go boom.
Well, that's not a very good example.
You want it to be in between the kick and the snare, alright?
Because you want to stay out of the way of the bass, and you want it to stay out of the way the keyboards.
So it goes [Ab] one and a two and a three and a four and a
to your next chord.
[Db] One and a
three and a four and a
and it just switches.
So [F] we put the two chords together, [Ab] it sounds like this.
[Db]
[Ab]
[Db]
[Ab]
[Db]
[Ab]
[Db]
[E]
[Am] All [Bb] right, now that wasn't the [Ab]
smoothest because these chords are not
they're slightly dissonant.
They're slightly dissonant.
So if you find [C] that you're not getting the [Db] sound that you want entirely from these chords, you can [Ab] also play an A,
A flat here, and [Dbm] a D flat here.
[Bb] But it loses [Ab] its vibe.
The song really should be these two chords, alright?
[Db]
Now, the part [F] before the
[Ab] part before the guitar solo
[Db] is going to be a D flat [Ebm] to an E flat
[Ab] to a C minor [Bb] 7 to a B flat minor 7, and that [Db] just goes.
[Eb]
[Bbm]
[C] [Db] [Eb]
[Fm] Then you [Ab] go back into the
[Eb] After I hit the chord, I let it ring, and then I give it a quick down [Bbm] before I move.
[E] But you should listen to the [Bb] song to get that [Abm] timing just right, and then after you play that, let's play it together for us.
[Db] [Eb]
[Gb]
[Eb]
[Db] Then it [Bb] goes back into [Ab] the
[Db]
[Db]
[Ab]
[Db]
[Bb] Okay, so that's the entire song.
If you want to take a solo, A flat major pentatonic.
[Ab]
[C]
[Bb] But you can [Abm] also get that major 7th in there, right?
[Fm] [Ab]
[Gb] [Eb] [Ab]
Okay, so Bob Marley, Waitin' In Vain.
