Hi, I'm James Hill and I'm here to tell you about my brand new book, Duets for One.
[G]
[Cm]
[G] Most of the time when we play chord melody style on the ukulele, we play it so that the
chords [Cm] and the melodies move in the same rhythm, [F] a bit like this.
[C] [F]
There's nothing wrong with that.
I can hear the chords, I can hear the melody, but it still sounds like it's being played
by one person on one instrument.
In Duets for One, you'll learn how to change that.
You'll learn [C] how to maintain a steady accompaniment pattern like [Eb] this, while at the same time
playing a syncopated melody over top that has its own rhythm, like this.
[D]
[Dm]
[G]
[Gm]
[F] [Cm]
[Gm] [Dm] [G] [Bb]
[Fm] There are tons [Bm] of arrangements like this in the book.
Classical pieces, jazz tunes, popular favorites.
Here's another one, Georgia on my Mind, same style.
[G] [B]
[G]
[A] [Eb]
[D] [E] [G]
[Gb] [D]
[B] [G]
[Gb] And if all of that just seems too complicated right now, don't worry.
[N] There are beginner level, intermediate level, and advanced level arrangements in the book,
as well as an extensive introduction and primer on just how to play in this style.
A whole series of exercises that get you there step by step so you don't feel like you've
been thrown in the deep end.
Here's another way of getting a similar effect, where we've got really distinct melody and accompaniment layers.
You could try [C] using your thumb to go back and forth between two strings, and then use
your fingers to play the syncopated melody over top.
This is a Hank Williams tune from the book called I Saw the Light.
[F]

[C] And one more example, just to get you excited about this new collection of arrangements,
and to get you interested in this style of playing, here's a tune by Coldplay.
It's called Viva La Vida.
You'll hear the steady accompaniment pattern like this, all the way through.
I'm going to play the syncopated melody of the chorus right over top.
It goes like this.

style of music you like to play.
The book is called Duets for One.
It's available now.
I hope you'll check it out.
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you down the road.
