Hey, this is John with LearningGuitarNow.com and in this podcast
I'm going to show you how to play a Warren Haynes style lick in standard tuning playing slide guitar
This lesson is in the key of D
It's kind of similar to Statesboro blues
But I'm just going to break down this slide guitar lick in the style of Warren Haynes for you right now
[A] [D]
[G] [D]
[G] [Dm]
[D] [A] Okay, now that you've seen and heard the lick played of the backing track.
I'm going to dissect how to play this lick
So the first thing we're doing is we're starting off on the seventh fret of the D string once again
This is in standard tuning
Hitting that note
[F#m]
[A] sliding into the seventh fret
On [Dm]
[F#m] the B [D] string here.
We have this sound
[C#]
Right before the tune comes in you're going one two three four
[D] Next note is a tenth fret on the B string
[A] Then we're going to slide into [D#] the seventh fret of the B string and slide backwards to the sixth [G] fret
[C] And then hit the root note D on [D] the G string
[F#]
[C] Slide that [G] seventh fret on the G string to the tenth fret minor [D] third
Let it ring out and [F#] slide it up
[Gm] [F] And so now we're going to slide into the tenth fret of the B string [D#] and then hit the tenth fret of the high E string
[D] Letting them both ring out like that
And the next thing we're going to slide into the 13th fret of the high E string
And then [C#] immediately hit the 13th fret of the B [Fm] string
[G#] And slide it backwards
[D] [Gm] Then we're going to hit the seventh fret of the D string
[D#m] [D] Then slide in from the 6 to 7 on the B string
We'll do that four times so you have this
[C#]
Last one just slide into the [A] seventh fret of the B string so slowly the whole lick is [Gm] this
[Bm] [A]
[F#] [Dm]
[D] [G#]
[D]
It's just a really cool lick in the style of Warren Haynes
I just came up with [G] it, but he's always doing you know things like that and I start off with just the string skipping
Take note of you're hitting the D string and then playing a lick [Dm] on the B string right after
[D]
There's all kind of variations you can play with that type of lick
You can hear him doing those type of licks over blue sky, Statesboro blues, one way out
He just wears out that lick a lot
[Gm] And then another cool thing to take note of in this lesson is a sliding and letting the high E string
Ring out with the B string have [D] this
Making sure to mute the G string with your thumb
[G]
You'll hear him doing that a lot sliding into that 13th fret the minor third and then hitting the flat seventh
[G#]
[D]
[B] [E]
[G] [Dm] [Gm] So that's a few [Dm] things you can take away from learning this Warren Haynes style slide guitar in a standard tuning
You know just using that position here
And then using [G#] the 10th fret and the key [D] of D here
You want to hear some of the cool blues [Gm] moves just move it up three frets and you have that [D] sound
[A] [D] [Gm] So that's a couple of ways you [N] can kind of get around the fretboard a little bit in standard tuning slide
