This is the guitar lesson [F] for Nirvana's The Man Who [Eb] Sold the World the easy way [F] and the correct way.
First things first, make sure your guitar is tuned a half step down.
So this is going to be E flat, A [D] flat, D flat, [G] G flat, B [A] flat, and E flat.
Alright, [D] we basically just [Db] loosen our guitar [C] tuning pegs just a little bit to give us this tuning okay.
So let's talk about the lead guitar part, how the song [Em] starts off.
This is the signature lick [Ab] of the song.
Alright, [Gm] this is how you [B] play it.
Down pluck, take your pointer [D] finger and put it on the [C] second fret G string.
[D] Down pluck [Ab] that three times.
[Db]
Alright now you take your pointer finger off, pluck it [Gb] once.
[Gm] Now we put our pointer finger back on and we're going to do a hammer on pull off with
our middle finger on [G] the third fret [C] and off again.
[Db] So [F]
far we [Ab] have.
And then last but not least [B] we just pluck it open.
[Gb] That's the G string open.
[Ab] [Gb] [Ab]
[Gb]
We [Db] end on putting our pointer [Fm] finger on the second fret [C] G string once again and plucking it [Gb] once.
So for the intro of the [Eb] song it starts [D] off with that little lead and then the rhythm
[C] guitar comes in [Eb] and that's F [D] and D minor.
It goes [E] like this.
[Dbm]
Okay, so that was [Dm] F and D minor.
And here's the strumming pattern [B] of the song.
[Dm] The strumming pattern [E] is this.
Alright so it's down, down up, up down up, down down up, up down up, down down up, up down up.
Alright and now what I'm doing [Eb] to give it that signature Nirvana [C]
feel [G] is that second
[D] down stroke in that pattern I [E] actually mute so it's down, mute down, so down, mute, up,
up, down, up, down, mute, up, up, down, up, down, mute, up, up, down, up.
Okay.
[Bb] So practice that [Dm] over and over [C] again and you'll get it in no time.
[Eb] So when [F] I'm muting I'm basically just taking the tension [B] off the strings.
So I'm pushing [E] down right now on the minor rings, [Eb] I take the tension off and it gives
me that nice muting sound.
So my fingers are [F] still touching the strings.
[Eb] So [D] once again the intro was F, [E]
D [Dbm] minor and now [C] this is where the song starts with the verse.
So we have A, [Ab]
[Eb] D [Dbm] minor,
[Ab] A, [E] F,
[B] C, [Ab] A, D minor [Dbm] and this is where the pre-chorus [B] comes in.
The [C] strumming pattern changes a little bit.
It actually gets easier.
You go to C [Eb] and it's just down up.
Okay [B] so it's, we go to [E] F and this is the hardest part of the song right here.
We do a [Dm] C sharp which [Fm] we bar the [G] first [F] fret [G] aside from this [F] E string right here but we
bar these [Eb] five strings.
Okay and then we take [F] our middle finger, put it on the second [Eb] fret B string, [Gm] take your
ring finger, put it on the third [F] fret D string and then you take your [Eb] pinky and put it on
the fourth [C] fret A string.
And that's where the regular strumming pattern comes back and then it goes right back into
the
[Cm] pre-chorus or chorus again.
[B] So it's,
[E]
and we have the C [C] sharp chord and [D] then it goes [Ab] back into the
[Gb] And then, which is the intro [E] all over again.
[Db]
[Dbm] Okay [Gm] so really not too hard of [D] a chord progression or strumming pattern or [C] anything at [Bb] all.
It's a great song to play.
One last thing that I'm [F] going to show you that nobody else [Eb] I really don't think can
show you or has shown you online is the solo at the end okay.
This is where the electric guitar [Ab] goes from
[Gb] And then it goes you [C] [Eb] know
[Ab]
[E]
[Eb] [Db]
[Ab]
[Eb] Okay so [Ab] that one I just [Dm] pretty much tabbed out right now by ear but this is how you do it.
[F] So you play your intro [Ab] lick a couple times.
[Abm] [Gb]
And then we [Ab] go to the second fret with our pointer finger, [E] we slide up [Eb] to the sixth fret
[Ab] on the G string.
And then we go up to the tenth [E] and then we go down to the [Eb] ninth and we stay there.
So we go [Ab] pluck
[Eb]
it along with the rhythm okay so you can basically play along with the track
and just pluck this note.
So I go
[D] Then I go back to my intro [Ab] lick again.
The [G] next part what I'm doing is I'm sliding all the way up to the tenth [E] fret and then
I go to the ninth [Dm] and the seventh back to the ninth.
So I [E] go
[Db]
[Eb]
[Ab] [Db]
[Ab] [E]
[Db]
[Eb]
[B]
[Gb] [Ab]
Not [Bb] bad and the song ends right after the [Gb] solo.

Okay [B] so it's, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

_ [Eb] Okay so [Ab] that one I just [Dm] pretty much tabbed out right now by ear but this is how you do it.
[F] So you play your intro [Ab] lick a couple times.
_ _ [Abm] _ _ _ _ [Gb] _
_ And then we [Ab] go to the second fret with our pointer finger, [E] we slide up [Eb] to the sixth fret
