Hello, this is C-Dub with PianoClubHouse.com and today I'm going to show you some chord
substitutions in the key of D flat.
I'm going to use some tritones and just some different [Bb] stuff to expand your chord memory.
We're going to use the song Thank You Lord, the [Db] traditional hymn.
[Ab] [Bbm]
[Bb] [Ab] [D]
[Ebm]
[Bbm] [Ebm]
[Ab]
[Bb] [Db]
[Cm] [F] [Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm]
[D] [Ebm] [Db] [Gb]
[Bbm] [Ebm]
[Gb] [Db]
All right, so we're going to take this song and we're going to just kind of dice it up
and spice it up a little bit.
[G]
[Db] So, I like to start with a little, you know, kind of give you a foundation of the song.
[Ab]
All right, so instead of going down to the C, we're going to do something [Db] like this.
[F]
[B] Real [F] simple.
We're doing an F, E flat in my left hand.
In my right hand I have A, B, and E flat.
It gives it a whole different feel, but it's a simple chord too at the same time.
[Db]
All [F]
[Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm] [D]
[B] right, that's what we're going to do here.
So, instead [Bb] of, [Ab] [D] [Ebm]
[Bbm]
all right, we're going [Bb] to do.
[Fm] [D]
[B]
So, all I did was really just change a few [Ebm] notes, [B] you know, to get that different feel.
But you can hear the difference and the, [N] it changes up the whole [B] feel of that chord.
So, [Bb] yeah.
[Fm] [D]
[B]
All right, so there I [Eb] have E [B] flat, [Db] B,
[Ebm] and D flat in my left hand.
In my right hand I have [B] G flat, B, D flat, and G flat.
All right.
And this next chord I'm going to do, I like to [N] kind of get into it with like some ghost
notes, or if you want to call it that, in my left hand.
[B] So, I'll be like.
[Db]
[C] [Db]
So, let's take it from the top again.
[B]
[Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm] [D]
[B] [Db]
[F] All right, that's the next one right there.
So, instead [Ebm] of going.
[Bbm] [B]
[F]
[Am] All right.
Kind of gives a little edgier sound too.
You know, I like [F] it.
[Db] All right, so I did, I [C] went down from [A] C, [C]
[B] B, [Bb] B [F] flat, then I have [Db]
A and D flat in my left
hand, G, [C]
C, [Db] and F in my right hand.
All right.
Now, the chord I would have normally have been on [G] would have been right here.
[Eb] But I took the tritone, this right here, from E flat, [A]
and I went to A with it.
[Eb]
Tritone, six half [F] steps up, one, two, [Ab] three, four, [A] five, six.
And I built a chord based off of this bass note here.
[F]
All right.
So, you can do [B] that a lot in music.
[N]
You know, you can either do it theory-wise or you can do it just by your ear.
You know, what sounds good.
Sometimes I'll take the melody note and just find different chords and go with it and see
what fits with the song.
You know, there's many different ways to do it.
So, we'll [Db] continue.
So, we have.
[F]
[Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm] [Dm]
[B] [F]
[Ebm]
[Db] I like to add that one too.

[Bb] [Fm]
[D] [Ebm] [Db] [Gb]
[Bbm] [Ebm]
[Gb] [Db]

[G]

[Bbm]
[Bb] [Fm] [D]
[B] right, that's what we're going to do here.

[Bbm]
all right, we're going [Bb] to do.
