[N] So, Farewell to Aaron is a very popular tune, kind of an exciting tune.
It's one that I recorded with the great Buffy band and that popularised the tune.
I can't remember where I heard it first, but it's not to be confused with a tune with a similar title, Farewell to Ireland.
There's Farewell to Aaron, which is the tune I'm going to deal with now, and another one called Farewell to Ireland,
which is quite a different tune, has a very different mood.
This one has four parts.
It's in the key of A, so it's kind of bright and exciting.
And the four parts make it a fairly involved, complex kind of a tune.
But I'll go through it in a fairly basic manner and hopefully that will give you a chance to grasp all of the nuts and bolts of this tune,
and we can dress it up later.
So, here we go.
It starts on a big low A note.
[Am] [F#] [Gm]
[A#] So that would be the first phrase.
[A] And [Cm] then [Gm]
[Bm] [A#m] the second phrase.
[F#] [E] [A]
[A#] I'll do that again.
[F#] [D] [A]
[A#] So the first half of the first part.
[Cm] [Gm]
[A] [Cm] [A#] [A]
[A#] And then the third phrase.
Farewell to Aaron.
We've been through the basic version, so I'll give you a few more suggestions now to flesh the tune out a wee bit
with some rolls and triplets, etc.
And I start off usually with that long bass A, and I usually try to make it sound [G#] rich.
So at the very start I probably wouldn't play a roll or anything, just a nice big fat A [Am] sound.
[F#] [Gm]
[G] [Am] And I do my little triplet there.
[F#] I [A#]
[Am]
[F#] [A] [A#]
[D] follow that up with another [A#] triplet, [A]
and I draw through the A with a nice long [D] full bow stroke [A] [F#m] [G] to give it a [F#] frat rich [D] sound.
And I get [E] the rhythm by tapping the string [F#m] with probably [G] the third finger.
[B] [Bm] That's where the beat comes in.
[F#] [B]
