this tune is called Kid on the Mountain.
It's a slip jig and there are five parts.
Very well known, probably the most famous of all the slip jigs I'd say.
It was popularised
back in the 20s or 30s by the famous Michael Coleman, great slogo fiddler.
So here's a
simple basic version of the tune.
As I said it's a slip jig so it's a 9-8 and the rhythm
is a count of [Bm] three.
One, two, three, one, two, [Gb] three.
So that would be the first phrase
[Bb] [Gb]
[Bb]
[Gb] [Bb]
[Gb] and the next phrase.
[Bbm] [Bb]
[Gb] [Bb] [Gb]
[Bb] [E] So again it's the kind of call and answer idea.
First one, [Gb]
[Bb] [Gb] [Bbm]
[Gb] [Bb] [Gb]
[Bb] [Gb]
[Bb] [Gb] [Bb]
so I'll just
play that whole section, the A [Bbm] part.
So the Kid on the Mountain is usually played at [Gbm] a fairly
fast tempo, something like [Em] [Bb]
[G] [Bbm] one, two, three, one, two, three.
But I'm going to take the tempo down
a little bit for the purpose of this demonstration, give you a chance to absorb some of the places I
might add rolls, triplets, variations etc.
So the very opening note, most of the time I would
play that E [E] as a roll, a long E.
[D] But often I play it as three separate notes [Gb] and at the beginning
I'd probably choose to play as three separate notes, [Bbm]
[Abm] just to kind of set [Bb] the rhythm of the slip
jig.
And I always find starting, when your very first note is a roll, there always seems to be a
risk of it not coming out clearly.
So [Gb] I'd probably save that till the next time round.
So that's
[Bb] again, if you remember, if you [A] saw the jig
[Gbm] demonstration [D] in the dance [Em] rhythm section,
[A] you might have [D] [E] remembered that [Gbm] I talk about slurring [G] onto the [Bm] beat.
So this slip jig measure as triplets.
[G] [Gb] [B]

[Gbm]
[B] [D] [Bm]
[G] [A]
