How to Play "Face In the Crowd" by Tom Petty on Guitar chords
Start Jamming...
A Face in the Crowd!
What's up guys?
A little Tom Petty for you.
I'm Thomas from the band Radius and we are breaking down A Face in the Crowd.
I love this song, super easy, super mellow, you know, very mellow Tom Petty song and the
chords are super simple.
So it starts off with probably my favorite chord ever in the world and I kind of don't
want to share it with you guys because I want to keep it to myself, all to myself.
But I'm going to share it for you because I want you to write your own songs with it.
I don't even know what this chord is called.
It's sweet though, okay?
And I've got to figure out how to put my fingers.
It's pretty tough to play.
But it sounds something like this.
[G]
[Bm] How beautiful is that?
[G]
And the song starts off like this, [Bm] okay?
And what it is, is it's 9th fret on the D string, [Em] [Ab] 11th fret on the G string, and I'm
playing that with my [G] pinky, 8th fret on the B string, and 10th fret on the ring.
And that is how the song starts off.
Man, so sweet.
And [Bb] then it [Em] goes.
E minor, open, two, two, open, open, open.
To C, [C]
and [Em] repeat.
[C] And that is our verse.
That's it.
And there's a really cool guitar part which comes in like [G] this.
[Gb]
[Gm]
And then the C [Gb] chord happens, [G]
[D] and he just repeats this.
[Gb] And it's 4th fret on the D string, [Gm] open G, 3rd fret on the B.
So, let's see [E] if I can play the bass with that.
[Em]
It goes to C.
[C] [A]
That way you just kind of hear the bass of [Em] how it sounds.
[D] Oh man, so beautiful.
[G] Beautiful dissonances in [Em] this.
But super mellow.
E minor to C.
[C]
Okay?
And this brings us [Em]
to the
[C] chorus.
You [D] were just playing the D here.
D, going to [Am] A minor.
I'm going to repeat this.
[G] You [D] were just facing the [Am] path out in the [B] street.
[G] This is going to be basically a G chord, but I'm going to play the B [B] as the root.
[G] So, [B] 2nd fret on the A [G] string, open, open, 3, 3.
And then back to A minor.
[Am]
So, I'm just going to sub basically a [D] 3rd time instead of playing the D.
[Am] [D] I do [Am] a D to A [D] minor, D [Am] to A minor, and then instead of going to D,
I'm going to do [G] this weird B, G with the B in the bass,
and then just back to [Am] A minor.
And then the 4th time I just go [Em] E minor, back to C.
[C] Which you know.
So, super simple [Bb] song.
[Gb] Cool chords, very dissonant.
[Gm] [D]
And then this sweet chord [Bb] that takes me forever to land my fingers
because I can't quite remember how it goes.
And it's super awesome.
And here.
[Db] Wait, that's not even it.
How does it go?
It goes.
[Eb]
[Cm] That's why I didn't want to teach it to [Eb] you guys
because I can't even [Bb] remember it myself.
Here we go.
[Bbm]
Nope, that's not it.
[Gbm] Jesus.
[C] I can't even remember it.
[G]
Oh man, it's so sweet.
Oh, here it is.
[Bm] Wait.
Oh, that's it.
[B] That is it.
Oh man.
Okay, so.
[G] Wait.
There it is.
Tom Petty, you're so sneaky.
Okay, here it is.
[B] You guys don't forget this.
It is the 9th fret of the D string.
We're basically doing a 5th.
That's how I can remember it.
[G] And then another 5th.
So it's like a 5th on top of [B] a 5th.
[G] But with a dissonance right there.
[Em]
And then you can even play the low E.
It's some minor 9 of some sort.
Oh man, Tom Petty, you almost got me.
[Bm] You almost got me.
[G] Facing the crowd.
That is it, guys.
[Em] And man, there's nothing else I can teach you
other than try to remember your chords.
